Brad Lightcap, the long-serving Chief Operating Officer (COO) of OpenAI, has announced his exit from the prominent artificial intelligence company. Lightcap shared the news via a post on X (formerly Twitter), indicating his intention to “start something new.” He also conveyed an internal message to the OpenAI team, reflecting on his tenure and expressing gratitude for their collaboration.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent most of the last decade pursuing our mission and building this company. Sitting here today, mission success feels within sight,” Lightcap stated in his message. He hinted that his decision comes after months of contemplation about the future of AI and identifying key challenges that could impact OpenAI's overarching mission.
Lightcap's Journey at OpenAI
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018, initially serving as Chief Financial Officer (CFO). He was subsequently promoted to COO in 2022. Earlier this year, during an executive reshuffle, he transitioned from the COO role to lead special projects within the company. Before his time at OpenAI, Lightcap had a professional relationship with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, having worked alongside him at the startup accelerator and venture capital firm Y Combinator.
Reflecting on his contributions, Lightcap noted, “I had the privilege of building the first versions of most of our operations and business teams – from Finance to Legal, People, CorpSec, GTM/Gov, Partnerships, and more.” He expressed pride in watching these teams mature under capable leadership.
Teasing a New AI Chapter
While Lightcap has not yet disclosed the specifics of his next endeavor, he strongly suggested that he plans to either launch or join a new venture. He conveyed that he believes there are “several important things the world needs to figure out correctly” as the AI industry moves into its next phase.
“I’ll have more to share soon, but I believe in OpenAI more than ever and am excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point,” he added. Despite his departure from an internal leadership position, he intends to continue supporting OpenAI’s mission from an external perspective.
Recent Departures at OpenAI
Lightcap’s departure follows a series of other high-profile exits from OpenAI, occurring as the company reportedly prepares for an initial public offering (IPO). Recently, Fidji Simo, head of AGI development, stepped down due to health reasons. Bill Peebles, who previously led Sora, OpenAI’s innovative video-generation product, has also left the company. Additionally, Kevin Weil, a vice president overseeing OpenAI's Science division, has departed.
