· · 2 min read

OpenAI has named Prabhjeet Singh, formerly Uber's President for India and South Asia, as its new Managing Director for India. Singh will join in September to spearhead consumer growth, enterprise partnerships, and regulatory engagement in the country, a top-priority market for the AI firm.

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research and deployment company, has appointed Prabhjeet Singh as its new Managing Director for India. Singh, who previously served as President of Uber India and South Asia, will assume his role in September, becoming OpenAI's most senior leader in the country.

The appointment underscores OpenAI's strategic focus and increasing investment in India, which the company identifies as one of its fastest-growing and top-priority markets globally. Singh will report directly to Kiran Mani, OpenAI's Managing Director for APAC (Asia Pacific).

Key Responsibilities in India

As Managing Director, Prabhjeet Singh will oversee a broad range of critical functions for OpenAI's expansion in India. His mandate includes:

  • Driving consumer growth and adoption of OpenAI's products.
  • Cultivating enterprise partnerships and fostering relationships with businesses and institutions.
  • Engaging with regulatory bodies and navigating the evolving AI policy landscape.
  • Managing overall operations within India.
  • Supporting the broader AI ecosystem in the country.

OpenAI emphasized that Singh's leadership will be instrumental in enabling more consumers, businesses, institutions, and government bodies across India to benefit from advanced AI technologies.

Prabhjeet Singh's Background

Singh brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at Uber, where he led the mobility business across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. His leadership was crucial in scaling Uber's operations and market presence in these regions. An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad, Singh's educational background complements his extensive experience in technology and market expansion.

OpenAI's Growing Commitment to India

The decision to appoint a dedicated country head reflects OpenAI's deepening commitment to the Indian market. Company CEO Sam Altman has consistently praised India's rapid AI adoption and vibrant tech ecosystem. During the India AI Summit earlier this year, Altman highlighted the country's impressive speed of technology adoption and its conviction to invest across the entire AI stack, from infrastructure to application layers.

OpenAI first established its presence in India by opening an office in New Delhi in November 2025. With Prabhjeet Singh now at the helm, the company is poised to further accelerate its initiatives, strengthen local partnerships, and expand its footprint in a market that Altman believes is on the verge of a massive, AI-driven entrepreneurial explosion.
