Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang forecasts a massive global build-out of AI data centers, potentially costing $7 trillion by decade's end. This infrastructure boom will generate numerous high-paying jobs in skilled trades like construction and electrical work, with some roles exceeding $100,000 annually.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has predicted an unprecedented global infrastructure expansion driven by the construction of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Speaking at the World Economic Forum, Huang stated this build-out, which could see technology companies invest around $7 trillion globally by the end of the decade, will unlock a significant wave of high-paying jobs, primarily in skilled trades.

Amid widespread concerns about AI's impact on employment, Huang highlighted that the impending demand for massive AI infrastructure will shift job creation away from traditional white-collar sectors and towards hands-on professions. He specifically pointed to roles in plumbing, construction, electrical work, and steelworking as areas that will see drastic increases in demand.

Skilled Trades Set for a Boom

Huang emphasized the critical need for skilled workers to construct and maintain these vast AI data centers. He noted that many of these hands-on positions, including electricians, construction workers, and supervisors, could command salaries exceeding $100,000 per year.

“It's wonderful that the jobs are related to tradecraft, and we're going to have plumbers and electricians and construction and steelworkers,” Huang remarked. “Everybody should be able to make a great living. You don't need to have a PhD in computer science to do so.”

This perspective suggests a bright future for individuals pursuing vocational training and skill-based careers, positioning them as essential contributors to the AI revolution.

Addressing the Workforce Gap

The prediction comes as reports indicate a current shortage of skilled laborers required for AI-related infrastructure. A McKinsey report cited in the discussion indicated that between 2023 and 2030, the United States alone would need approximately 130,000 additional trained electricians, 240,000 more construction laborers, and 150,000 more construction supervisors.

This growing demand underscores the potential for skilled trades to offer some of the most reliable and future-proof career paths in an increasingly automated world. For the next generation entering the workforce, mastering a practical skill may prove to be a strategic advantage.
