Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has made a bold declaration, stating that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has officially arrived. This announcement coincides with the public unveiling of OpenAI's new frontier model, GPT-6 Astra, which Huang lauded as a significant step forward in AI capabilities.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Huang revealed that GPT-6 Astra was developed using over 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 GPUs, a testament to Nvidia's critical role in powering advanced AI development. He also indicated Nvidia's plans to bring another 400,000 GPUs online in the near future, further expanding the infrastructure for AI innovation.
OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra: A Leap in AI
OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026, positioning it as the world's most intelligent and aligned AI model. The company claims Astra can perform highly demanding professional tasks with unparalleled speed, accuracy, and judgment. OpenAI President Greg Brockman echoed Huang's sentiment, suggesting that the industry is now definitively moving into the AGI era.
Advanced Capabilities and Applications
GPT-6 Astra boasts a wide array of capabilities designed to integrate seamlessly into complex workflows. Skepticism from AI Researchers
Despite the enthusiasm from Nvidia and OpenAI, not all experts agree with the declaration of AGI's arrival. Gary Marcus, a prominent AI researcher, expressed strong disapproval of Huang's claims. Marcus criticized the lack of evidence and clear definitions for AGI provided by Huang, suggesting it was an attempt to dictate a scientific question through corporate influence.
"Huang gave no evidence and no definitions, which feels to me like an effort at a takeover of a scientific question by corporate fiat," Marcus stated. "Declaring victory without a definition simply muddies the waters."
Marcus further elaborated on a 10-point definition of AGI, asserting that GPT-6 Astra only meets one or two of these benchmarks. He concluded that, by conventional definitions, Astra still falls short of true Artificial General Intelligence.
Rollout and Accessibility
GPT-6 Astra is currently being rolled out to a limited number of organizations. OpenAI plans to expand access to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in the coming days. Additionally, the powerful AI model will be made available through the OpenAI API and AWS, broadening its reach to developers and enterprises worldwide.
