John Ternus: Before Apple, He Designed Virtual Reality Headsets

· · 2 min read

Before joining Apple in 2001, current Senior VP of Hardware Engineering John Ternus began his career as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems. There, he designed virtual reality headsets, gaining crucial early experience in hardware development.

Before becoming a key leader in Apple's hardware division, John Ternus honed his engineering skills in the nascent field of virtual reality. His early career as a mechanical engineer laid a foundational understanding of product design and hardware development that would prove invaluable at one of the world's largest technology companies.

Early Engineering Roots at Virtual Research Systems

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, John Ternus embarked on his professional journey at Virtual Research Systems. In this role, he was immersed in the cutting-edge task of designing virtual reality headsets, a technology still in its infancy during the late 1990s.

His work involved hands-on technical development, giving him practical experience in bringing complex hardware concepts to fruition. This period at Virtual Research Systems was instrumental in shaping his approach to engineering and product development, emphasizing precision and innovation in physical design.

Academic Foundation and Innovative Projects

Ternus's academic background at the University of Pennsylvania not only provided him with a strong theoretical base but also encouraged practical application. His senior project, a mechanical feeding arm operated by head movements for individuals with quadriplegia, demonstrated an early aptitude for combining engineering with user-centric design challenges.

Transition to Apple and Continued Hardware Leadership

The experience gained from designing virtual reality hardware at Virtual Research Systems directly preceded John Ternus's move to Apple in 2001. He joined Apple's Product Design team, where his first major project was contributing to the Apple Cinema Display. This initial foray into Apple's ecosystem quickly expanded, leading him through increasingly senior hardware roles.

His pre-Apple work, though relatively brief compared to his extensive career at the tech giant, provided the essential groundwork for his subsequent ascent. Ternus would eventually oversee critical product lines like AirPods, Mac, and iPad as Vice President of Hardware Engineering, and later take charge of iPhone and Apple Watch hardware as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, a testament to his enduring expertise in hardware innovation.
