Jeff Bezos Pushes Prime Video AI Redesign for Personalized Viewing

· · 2 min read

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is driving a major AI-focused redesign of Prime Video, internally called 'Lighthouse.' This overhaul aims to enhance personalized content recommendations and user experience for over 200 million subscribers.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is personally spearheading a significant artificial intelligence-driven overhaul for Prime Video. The project, codenamed 'Lighthouse,' aims to position the streaming service as a premier showcase for Amazon's extensive AI capabilities, ultimately delivering a more tailored and engaging experience for its vast user base.

Bezos Demands AI-Centric Redesign

The impetus for this ambitious redesign stemmed from a contentious presentation last autumn, where Bezos expressed dissatisfaction that planned Prime Video updates did not sufficiently emphasize AI and personalization. This direct feedback prompted executives to scrap earlier plans and embark on a new, AI-first strategy, making AI a core component of the user experience.

'Lighthouse' Features Personalized Recommendations

The 'Lighthouse' initiative encompasses a broad array of features designed to leverage AI for improved film and TV recommendations. These enhancements include learning viewer preferences and responding to spoken requests, indicating a deeper integration of conversational AI. The project also envisions a redesigned home screen featuring AI-driven tiles that present dynamic, pre-populated viewing suggestions, such as 'action movies from the 1980s' or 'Christmas rom-coms.'

While testing versions of the redesign with small user groups, the final form remains fluid, subject to user feedback and financial considerations. Traditional search functionalities and a prominent top-of-screen area for promoting new releases and live events, like 'Thursday Night Football,' are expected to remain.

Alexa Integration and Strategic Importance

As part of 'Lighthouse,' Prime Video is exploring the integration of Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant into its search and browsing experience. This move follows Amazon's release of an overhauled generative AI version of Alexa in early 2025 and its subsequent integration into the main Amazon shopping site by May 2026.

Bezos's personal involvement, including receiving periodic updates on the project, underscores the strategic importance Amazon places on Prime Video as a demonstration platform for its AI ambitions. The company views improved personalization as a direct pathway to increased user engagement and viewing hours. This initiative is part of a broader commitment, with Amazon allocating approximately $200 billion to capital expenditures this year, predominantly for AI development.

Prime Video, a central benefit of the Amazon Prime membership, currently holds a 4.2% share of TV viewing in the U.S., ranking fourth behind YouTube, Netflix, and Disney+. This AI-driven personalization push is seen as crucial for sharpening its competitive edge and reinforcing Prime subscriptions, especially in markets where Amazon’s e-commerce footprint is less dominant.
