Japan's railway operator, JR Central, has announced the launch of its first-ever overnight Shinkansen bullet train service, the "Tokaido Lumiere Express." This innovative service aims to revolutionize travel between the Tokyo metropolitan area and Osaka, allowing passengers to maximize their time at their destination by traveling while they sleep.
Debut and Route Details
The Tokaido Lumiere Express is set to make its inaugural journey on August 8. The special train will depart from the Tokyo metropolitan area in the late evening, around 10:00 PM, and arrive in Shin-Osaka by 6:59 AM the following morning. This schedule ensures travelers reach the Kansai region before the first regular Shinkansen services begin, providing a full day for activities upon arrival.
The name "Lumiere," French for "light," was chosen by JR Central to symbolize starting a new day with the morning light, reflecting the service's core benefit.
Onboard Experience and Stops
During its overnight run, the Tokaido Lumiere Express will make several stops, including Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Gifu-Hashima, and Kyoto. Boarding will be permitted exclusively at Tokyo, Shinagawa, and Shin-Yokohama stations.
A unique aspect of this service is a planned six-hour halt at Gifu-Hashima Station, from midnight until approximately 6:00 AM. During this period, passengers are welcome to remain on board. While the train is stopped, doors will open for about 30 minutes after arrival and prior to departure, allowing access to vending machines and designated smoking areas within the ticket gates. However, passengers will not be allowed to exit the station through the ticket gates to the outside.
JR Central has advised passengers that routine track and facility maintenance will occur at Gifu-Hashima Station during the overnight stop, which may result in some noise and vibrations inside the train compartments. Additionally, kiosk and onboard sales cart services will not be available during this halt. Smoking is strictly prohibited throughout the train, including vestibules and restrooms.
Ticketing and Future Plans
Bookings for the Tokaido Lumiere Express will open at 2:00 PM on July 3, accessible through the official JR Central Tours website and mobile application. An ordinary car reserved seat for the Tokyo-Shin-Osaka route is priced at 15,000 yen, inclusive of tax. Green Car (first-class) packages and child-priced tickets will also be available.
This overnight Shinkansen service is currently offered as a special travel package, designed to meet the increasing demand for leisure travel during the summer season. JR Central views this as a trial run to assess passenger demand and operational outcomes. The company will review the results of this inaugural service before making any decisions about its potential as a regular seasonal offering in the future.
