ISRO Successfully Launches EOS-05, India's First Geo-Orbit Imaging Satellite

India's space agency ISRO successfully launched the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite into geosynchronous transfer orbit using the GSLV-F17. This marks a significant milestone as the nation's first imaging satellite designed for a continuous, fixed perspective over Earth.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone on September 3, 2026, by successfully launching the EOS-05 Earth observation spacecraft aboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F17). The launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre marked India's first-ever imaging satellite to be stationed in a geosynchronous orbit, promising a new era for space-based monitoring.

Applause erupted in the launch control room as the GSLV-F17 vehicle, the 19th mission in India's GSLV program, soared skyward. The rocket meticulously executed all critical flight parameters, precisely placing the EOS-05 into its targeted Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. ISRO Chief V Narayanan hailed the mission as a “historical achievement” for the country, emphasizing the advanced capabilities of the new satellite.

What is EOS-05?

EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth observation spacecraft that represents a fundamental leap in India's space-based monitoring infrastructure. Unlike traditional low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that offer intermittent views, EOS-05 is designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit, matching Earth's rotational speed. This allows it to maintain a continuous, fixed perspective over a targeted area.

The ISRO chief highlighted the strategic importance of the satellite's unique positioning, noting its capacity to provide continuous data from a 36,000 km platform. He also mentioned that EOS-05 is the heaviest satellite lifted by a GSLV vehicle to date, further underscoring the success of the GSLV-F17 mission.

Overcoming Past Challenges

This success follows a previous attempt in August 2021, when a GSLV Mark II launched the EOS-03 spacecraft, which was unfortunately lost due to an anomaly with its third stage. The successful deployment of EOS-05 demonstrates ISRO's resilience and advancements in heavy-lift launch vehicle reliability.

The EOS-05 launch was India's third orbital mission of 2026. Earlier in the year, an ISRO Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) failed to deliver 16 satellites to orbit in January, while Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket achieved the nation's first-ever private orbital launch in July.
