iPhone 17 Leads Q2 2026 Global Smartphone Sales; Apple & Samsung Dominate Top 10

· · 3 min read

Apple's iPhone 17 was the world's best-selling smartphone in Q2 2026, capturing 6% of global unit sales. Apple secured the top three spots, while Apple and Samsung collectively claimed 26% of the top 10 rankings amid an 11% overall market decline.

In the second quarter of 2026, Apple's iPhone 17 emerged as the world's best-selling smartphone, according to new data from Counterpoint Research. This performance underscores Apple's continued dominance in the global market, even as the overall smartphone industry navigated a challenging period marked by declining sales and a shortage of RAM components.

Apple Secures Top Three Spots

Counterpoint Research's Global Handset Model Sales Tracker revealed that the iPhone 17 accounted for 6% of global smartphone unit sales, positioning it as the top seller from April to June 2026. Following closely, the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro secured the second and third positions, respectively, giving Apple a clean sweep of the top three spots.

Collectively, Apple and Samsung cemented their control over the premium segment, each holding five positions within the top 10 best-selling smartphones. Together, these two tech giants accounted for 26% of global smartphone unit sales, marking a 2% year-on-year increase in their combined share despite an 11% decline in the overall market.

iPhone 17's Strong Performance and Apple's Growth

Apple's unit sales experienced a 5% year-on-year growth during Q2 2026. This growth was particularly robust in key regions such as India, Japan, and the Middle East and Africa, with sales nearly doubling in South Korea. The standard iPhone 17 model benefited from significant upgrades that effectively narrowed its feature gap with the more premium Pro models, attracting a wider consumer base.

Demand for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max was also strong, supported by various trade-in programs, promotional offers, and flexible financing options. The report noted that rising smartphone prices have increasingly pushed consumers towards higher-end models, further boosting the appeal of Apple's premium offerings. The iPhone 17e also remained a top 10 contender, performing well in the US and Japan, partly due to carrier promotions and enhanced internal storage at competitive prices.

Samsung's Android Leadership and A-Series Success

On the Android front, Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra claimed the title of the best-selling Android smartphone, ranking fourth overall globally. This marked a significant achievement, as it was the first ultra-premium Android device to lead Android sales in a June quarter. The later launch of the S26 series shifted a larger portion of its sales into Q2, with the Ultra model alone accounting for over half of the series' total sales. Its innovative privacy display and advanced AI capabilities were highlighted as key differentiators.

Samsung's Galaxy A-series continued its popularity, driven by its affordability, widespread availability, and perceived value. All Galaxy A-series models featured in the top 10 offer six years or more of software support, a crucial factor influencing purchasing decisions as consumers increasingly seek longer smartphone replacement cycles.

Market Trends: Focus on Premium and Value

The Q2 2026 data illustrates a market that is increasingly concentrating on established flagship devices and value-focused models. Manufacturers are strategically allocating resources to premium and key volume-driving products to navigate market pressures and component shortages. Pricing strategies, promotional activities, financing options, and extended software support are playing pivotal roles in influencing consumer buying decisions, shaping the competitive landscape of the global smartphone market.
