Instagram Refreshes Wordmark After 10 Years, Sparks Mixed Reactions

· · 2 min read

Instagram has updated its text-only logo, or wordmark, for the first time in a decade, aiming for a sharper, more modern look. The redesign, which features altered letterforms and a semi-cursive style, has drawn varied responses across social media.

Meta-owned social media giant Instagram announced a significant refresh to its brand identity on August 13, introducing a new text-only version of its logo, known as a wordmark. This change marks the first update to the Instagram wordmark in ten years, with the company stating that the previous design had begun to appear dated.

A Decade in the Making: The New Instagram Wordmark

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, shared the news across Instagram and Threads, describing the updated text logo as “sharper and more modern.” He noted, “We updated the Instagram wordmark today, which is more than a decade old and felt dated. We feel the refresh is sharper and more modern, but references the original and has the simplicity and craft that's always made it Instagram.”

The previous Instagram wordmark, redesigned in 2016, featured a more traditional cursive script. The new iteration transitions to a hybrid style, blending semi-cursive and semi-print elements. This shift aims to give the logo a bolder, more compact appearance, with specific alterations to letterforms, particularly in the 's', 'r', and 'g' characters, to achieve a more modern and refined aesthetic.

Broader Visual Refresh and Public Reception

Beyond the wordmark, Instagram has also refreshed its broader visual style used throughout the platform. This includes the introduction of new typefaces such as Instagram Sans, Instagram Pen, and Instagram Mono, contributing to a more cohesive and contemporary design language.

However, the redesign has not been met with universal acclaim. Social media platforms quickly became a forum for mixed reactions, with many users criticizing the altered 'r' letterform, suggesting it resembles a 'z'. This observation has led to humorous remarks, with some users jokingly referring to the platform as “Instagzam.” Other critiques highlight that the sharper curves in the new logo can make it slightly harder to read at first glance.

Despite the online banter and divided opinions, Meta maintains that the refined wordmark and accompanying visual changes are designed to create a unified, forward-looking identity that performs consistently across all screen sizes and user interfaces.
