India's New AI Export: Human Motion Data for Robotics Training

India is emerging as a crucial source for human motion data, vital for training advanced AI and humanoid robots. Instawork Robotics Lab's new Instacore system captures diverse real-world human movements across various industries.

India is positioned to become a significant global exporter of human motion data, a critical resource for developing and training the next generation of artificial intelligence and humanoid robots. As the race to create general-purpose robots intensifies, companies are seeking vast quantities of real-world data to teach machines how humans interact with their physical environments.

Instawork's Initiative in India

Instawork Robotics Lab (IRL), the robotics division of US-based AI labor marketplace Instawork, is spearheading this effort in India. The company has launched "Instacore," a wearable five-camera system designed to capture detailed human movement and environmental data. This technology aims to train physical AI foundation models, enabling robots to understand and replicate complex human tasks.

Vaibhav Pandey, Country Manager for Instawork India, emphasized that India's appeal extends beyond just lower labor costs. "It’s not because of the cost that we are here, but because of the diversity of tasks and jobs that we can cover in India," Pandey stated. This extensive variety of human activities is crucial for physical AI, which requires models to learn how tasks are performed differently across diverse settings and with various objects.

Capturing Real-World Human Movement

The Instacore system includes cameras mounted on the head, chest, and wrists, along with sensors and a compute backpack. This setup captures synchronized video, hand movements, and spatial information as workers perform their daily routines. Instawork plans to deploy Instacore across multiple sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, hospitality, construction, and retail, to ensure maximum exposure to different movements, tools, and environments.

Siddharth Srivastava, Head of IRL APAC, highlighted the current bottleneck: "Compute isn't the bottleneck in physical AI anymore. The scale and diversity of real-world skill data is." Instawork estimates a massive shortfall, with projected data collection in 2026 (20 million hours) still representing less than 0.04% of what researchers believe is ultimately necessary for robust physical AI. This significant gap presents a substantial business opportunity.

Economic Impact and Future Prospects

The model also offers a new revenue stream for workers and businesses. Commercial establishments participating in data collection are compensated per hour, with no upfront hardware costs or disruption to their normal operations. Pandey anticipates that data collection itself could evolve into a new category of employment as physical AI expands. Additionally, demand for workers who can deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot robots is expected to grow.

Beyond data collection, India is also becoming a key engineering base for Instawork's robotics operations. Teams in India and the US collaborate on technology development, data pipeline management, and anonymization. The Bengaluru operation specifically focuses on building capabilities for deploying and maintaining the Instacore hardware.

Ultimately, Instawork's ambitious bet suggests that India's next major AI export may not be traditional software or models, but rather the invaluable human movement data essential for teaching machines how to navigate and operate effectively within the physical world.
