India's Fab Workforce: Tokyo Electron, Infineon, Micron Lead Training

Global semiconductor firms Tokyo Electron, Infineon, and Micron are spearheading initiatives to train India's specialized workforce for its burgeoning chip manufacturing industry. They are setting up training centers and expanding university partnerships.

India is rapidly advancing its semiconductor manufacturing ambitions, necessitating a highly skilled workforce beyond traditional chip design. To meet this demand, global technology leaders Tokyo Electron, Infineon Technologies, and Micron Technology are actively investing in talent development across the nation.

Tokyo Electron Establishes Gujarat Training Center

Japanese semiconductor equipment giant Tokyo Electron (TEL) is making a direct contribution by establishing a specialized training center in Gujarat. Slated to open by 2027 in partnership with the Japanese government, this facility aims to cultivate a dedicated talent pipeline for India’s expanding chip manufacturing sector. Toshiki Kawai, President and CEO of Tokyo Electron, emphasized the critical importance of developing future fab and equipment engineers for the industry's sustainable growth in India.

Infineon Brings Factory Floor to Classrooms

Infineon Technologies is adopting a practical, hands-on approach. In collaboration with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Infineon has launched the NIELIT–Infineon Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Semiconductor Manufacturing in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This CoE features a functional, industry-grade backend semiconductor manufacturing training line, equipped with eight units of advanced machinery provided by Infineon. The facility offers students, faculty, researchers, and professionals invaluable practical exposure to real-world semiconductor manufacturing processes and equipment.

Micron Nurtures Grassroots Talent and Research

Micron Technology's strategy extends from manufacturing operations to nurturing talent from the grassroots level. While establishing an Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, Micron is also significantly expanding its research and university engagement. Through its University Research Alliance, Micron collaborates with 20 universities across India, sponsoring research and credit-bearing design courses that allow students to work on industry-linked projects before entering the workforce.

Beyond higher education, Micron's CEO Sanjay Mehrotra highlighted the company's commitment to early talent development. Programs like the Micron Foundation’s chip camps, STEM labs, and “AI for All” initiatives reach tens of thousands of children, fostering early interest in semiconductor and related technologies long before they reach university age. These comprehensive efforts by leading global firms are crucial for building the specialized workforce India needs to realize its semiconductor manufacturing potential.
