In a burgeoning trend across India, manual laborers are increasingly supplementing their income by recording their daily work routines. This footage, often captured by cameras strapped to their heads, is being collected by companies to gather real-world data, which then serves a critical purpose: training artificial intelligence (AI) powered robots to perform similar tasks.

For individuals like 43-year-old Sunita Rathore, who sorts and cleans plastic waste in Karan Vihar, New Delhi, this arrangement offers a significant financial boost. Her routine involves meticulous tasks such as removing labels, separating plastic by grade, and stacking sacks for recycling. Now, an iPhone attached to her head diligently records these hand movements, carefully avoiding faces and legs.

Data Collection for Future Robotics

The primary motivation behind this data collection is to teach AI-powered machines how humans execute physical tasks. By observing these detailed recordings, robotics companies aim to develop more capable and autonomous robots. While workers like Rathore are aware of the additional income, they often do not know the precise technological applications of their footage.

This initiative extends beyond waste sorting, with workers in factories, warehouses, and other industrial settings also participating. The data captured creates a unique cycle: human labor performs the work, cameras document the movements, and this information is then leveraged to educate machines for potential automation.

Economic Impact and Future Implications

The financial incentive is substantial for many participants. Rathore, for instance, earns approximately ₹20,000 monthly from her recycling work. Wearing the camera adds an extra ₹150 per hour, enabling her to save for her four children's education. This additional income provides a vital safety net for many families.

However, this development also sparks considerable debate about the future of work. As AI and robotics advance, the very data collected from human workers today could contribute to automating the jobs currently performed by those same individuals.
