India Leads Global AI Adoption, Retail & FMCG Drive Growth: Deloitte-FICCI

· · 2 min read

India has emerged as the global leader in AI adoption among the top 15 countries, with retailers and FMCG firms extensively integrating the technology. A Deloitte India-FICCI report highlights AI's role in driving smarter forecasting, inventory, and customer engagement.

India has secured the top position globally in Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption, outperforming 14 other leading nations, according to a recent report by Deloitte India and FICCI. The study, titled "Consumer Trends IGNITEing Growth and Governance," reveals that Indian businesses, particularly within the retail and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sectors, are increasingly embedding AI into their core operations.

AI Moves to the Core of Business Operations

Unlike previous trends where AI was often confined to isolated productivity tools, Indian organizations are now deploying the technology across crucial functions. This includes enhancing customer engagement, fostering product innovation, improving demand forecasting, and strengthening supply chain management. This strategic integration is pivotal for driving both productivity and growth within the rapidly expanding consumer economy.

The report underscores that India's consumer economy is projected to reach approximately US$1.9 trillion by 2030. Achieving this growth will largely depend on how effectively businesses leverage AI, cultivate resilient operations, build connected commerce ecosystems, and derive actionable consumer insights to meet evolving customer expectations.

AI Reshaping Retail and FMCG Landscapes

The retail and FMCG sectors are at the forefront of this AI revolution. Companies are moving beyond basic applications like chatbots, integrating AI into sophisticated areas such as merchandising, dynamic pricing, inventory optimization, and operational decision-making. This allows for faster and more precise responses to fluctuating consumer demand.

Furthermore, AI-assisted shopping experiences and the rise of agentic commerce are beginning to transform how consumers discover products, compare alternatives, and ultimately make purchasing decisions. This shift coincides with India's retail environment becoming increasingly interconnected, blurring the lines between traditional physical stores, e-commerce platforms, and quick commerce models.

The Deloitte India-FICCI report emphasizes that AI is becoming the foundational technology for India's consumer economy, enabling businesses to significantly boost efficiency while simultaneously delivering more personalized and engaging shopping experiences.
