Google's $15 Billion AI Data Center in Vizag Begins Construction April 28

· · 2 min read

Google is set to commence construction on its massive $15 billion artificial intelligence data center in Visakhapatnam, India, with the foundation stone being laid on April 28. This 600-acre project aims to establish a gigawatt-scale AI infrastructure and subsea gateway.

Visakhapatnam, India – Google is embarking on one of its largest single foreign direct investment projects in India with the groundbreaking of a $15 billion artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. The foundation stone for this ambitious project is scheduled to be laid by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on April 28.

The investment, planned over the next five years, will establish Google's first dedicated AI hub in India. The facility is initially designed for a 1-gigawatt (GW) capacity, with a long-term target to expand to 5 GW. This potential scale could exceed India's total data center capacity as of late 2025 by more than threefold, marking Vizag as a significant global AI infrastructure hub.

Strategic Location and Advanced Infrastructure

Spanning 600 acres across three locations – Rambilli, Adavivaram, and Tarluvada – the data center will feature an international subsea-cable landing station. This crucial component, combined with robust AI infrastructure, will support Google Cloud and advanced AI services across India and global operations, deploying gigawatt-scale computing power.

Key Partnerships Drive Development

The monumental project involves strategic collaborations with major infrastructure players. AdaniConnex will be responsible for developing the core data center infrastructure, including the design of the gigawatt-scale AI facility, renewable-energy-linked power systems, transmission lines, and energy-storage solutions, aiming for green power operation where feasible.

Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel will construct and manage the high-capacity fiber-optic network. This includes a new international subsea cable landing station (CLS) in Vizag, crucial for providing low-latency, high-bandwidth connectivity vital for Google Cloud and AI workloads throughout India.

Economic Impact and Future Outlook

Beyond its technological advancements, the Google AI data center is projected to significantly boost the local economy. It is expected to generate high-value jobs and foster a new AI ecosystem, providing opportunities for the youth of Andhra Pradesh. With an anticipated completion by July 2028, the Vizag AI data center is poised to become Asia’s largest data center cluster, cementing India's position in the global AI landscape.
