Google Enters Tracker Market with Pixel Tag
At its annual Made by Google event, the tech giant officially introduced the Pixel Tag, its first Android-exclusive Bluetooth tracker. Positioned as a direct competitor to Apple's AirTag, the Pixel Tag aims to provide Android users with a seamless way to keep tabs on their belongings, fully leveraging Google's extensive Android ecosystem and Find My Device network.
Key Features and Design of the Pixel Tag
The Google Pixel Tag distinguishes itself with an oval shape and a premium stainless steel build. Unlike some competitors, it includes a built-in speaker to emit sound, aiding users in locating misplaced items. A notable advantage is its physical button, which can trigger a sound on a connected smartphone—a feature absent from Apple's AirTag.
The device boasts an IP67 dust and water-resistance rating, ensuring durability. It also features a user-replaceable battery. However, the Pixel Tag does not come with an integrated attachment point, meaning users will need to purchase additional accessories to secure it to keys or bags.
Advanced Tracking with Channel Sounding Technology
Similar to Apple's approach, the Pixel Tag integrates with the broader Android Find My Device network, allowing millions of Android devices to help pinpoint a lost tracker's location. A standout feature is its Channel Sounding technology, which provides significantly more precise distance measurements between two Bluetooth devices.
This advanced method utilizes Phase-Based Ranging (PBR) and Round-Trip Time (RTT) to determine distances with high accuracy, far surpassing the limitations of simple Bluetooth signal strength. Google has also built in robust protections against unwanted tracking, alerting Android users if an unfamiliar tracker is traveling with them, and even notifying iPhone users if a Pixel Tag is detected nearby.
Pricing and Availability for the Android Tracker
The Google Pixel Tag is compatible with Android 9 or newer devices equipped with Bluetooth 6. In India, a single Pixel Tag will be priced at Rs 3,799, slightly above the AirTag's current cost. A four-pack option will be available for Rs 12,900. Consumers can expect the Pixel Tag to hit the market for sale starting in November.
