· · 2 min read

Google has launched the Fitbit Edge, a new fitness tracker featuring AI-powered health coaching, a user-replaceable battery, and a durable, repairable design. It promises up to seven days of battery life and over 50 workout modes.

Google has officially unveiled the Fitbit Edge, its latest entry into the fitness tracker market, signaling a strategic shift towards integrated AI health coaching and more sustainable, repairable wearable technology. This new device aims to address common user concerns regarding device longevity and personal health management.

Advanced Health Tracking and AI Coaching

The Fitbit Edge is engineered to offer comprehensive activity and health monitoring. It features over 50 distinct workout modes, real-time guidance, and an improved built-in GPS that Google claims is 40% more accurate than previous generations. The device can automatically identify and categorize up to 100 activities, while an altimeter tracks elevation changes.

Health monitoring capabilities include continuous heart-rate tracking, on-wrist ECG assessments, skin-temperature measurements, sleep-stage analysis, and heart-rate variability. A new feature, Health Guardian, tracks blood pressure and insulin-resistance trends, alongside alerts for high and low heart rates. For personalized guidance, the Fitbit Edge integrates with Google Health Coach, available through Google Health Premium. Google emphasizes these features are for general wellness and not intended for medical diagnosis.

Designed for Durability and User Repairability

A significant highlight of the Fitbit Edge is its focus on durability and repairability. It boasts a remarkable battery life of up to seven days on a single charge, with a fast-charging option that provides a full day's power in just five minutes. Crucially, it is Google's first fitness tracker designed with a user-replaceable battery, making it a more environmentally friendly and long-lasting option for consumers.

The device sports a Hybrid OLED display, offering 46% more viewing area than earlier Fitbit trackers. Its 11.5mm-thick case, crafted from recycled aluminum, is notably 45% lighter than the Apple Watch Series 12, according to Google. Users can personalize their experience with customizable watch faces and interchangeable bands. Practical features like Google Maps integration, media controls, and call/message notifications are also included. The tracker is water-resistant up to 50 meters.

Pricing and Availability

The standard Fitbit Edge is priced at $179.99 (approximately ₹17,150). For fans of basketball star Stephen Curry, a special edition is available for $219.99 (roughly ₹21,000), featuring distinctive rye tones and game-day orange accents.

Currently, the Fitbit Edge is available for pre-order in select international markets, with sales officially commencing on October 27. Google has not yet announced specific launch dates or pricing for the Indian market.
