Google Tests Flipkart 'Buy' Button in Gemini for India's AI Shopping Experience

· · 2 min read

Google is trialing a new 'Buy' button with Flipkart in India, enabling direct product purchases within its Gemini AI interface. This limited test, focusing on electronics, is set to expand in October, streamlining the AI shopping experience for users.

Google has initiated a trial in India for an innovative shopping feature designed to integrate product discovery and direct purchase within its artificial intelligence (AI) interface. As part of this pilot program, e-commerce giant Flipkart is testing a 'Buy' button for select product listings displayed in Google's Gemini and AI Mode in Search.

Seamless AI-Powered Shopping

When users encounter a Flipkart product with the new 'Buy' button, tapping it will activate a Flipkart-branded checkout process directly within Google's AI interface. This eliminates the need for users to be redirected to a separate shopping website, promising a more streamlined and integrated experience.

The current trial is accessible to a restricted number of users and features a narrow range of products, primarily smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories. However, Google anticipates a broader rollout of this feature in October, strategically timed to precede India's bustling festive shopping season.

Evolution of Google's Commerce Strategy

This initiative represents a significant step beyond Google's previous Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which aimed to enable AI agents to interact with retailers throughout the shopping journey but often involved transferring items to a retailer's website for final purchase. The current test suggests a deeper integration, although the specific technology Flipkart is employing for this in-interface checkout remains undisclosed.

Google's move to facilitate direct transactions within its AI services aligns with its broader strategy to evolve AI tools beyond mere product recommendations. The company previously announced Flipkart as a partner for "agentic" shopping experiences in India. Google also holds a financial stake in Flipkart, having invested approximately $350 million in the company in 2024 for a minority share.

Currently, the direct 'Buy' option is not universally available across all retailers within Google's AI services. For instance, while Flipkart products offer this functionality in the test, Amazon listings appearing alongside them do not yet provide the same direct purchase capability.
