Google is reportedly testing a significant redesign of its Search homepage, aiming to put artificial intelligence tools at the forefront of how users initiate their queries. This experiment, currently rolled out to a limited number of users, suggests a future where AI features are immediately accessible upon opening Google.
Three AI Shortcuts Replace Traditional Search Button
According to reports, some users are seeing a version of the Google Search page where the traditional 'Google Search' button is replaced by three distinct AI feature buttons. These new shortcuts are:
- Create images: This allows users to directly access Google's AI image generation capabilities.
- Ask about files: Designed for interacting with uploaded documents or other supported digital files using AI.
- Brainstorm: This shortcut focuses on leveraging AI to develop and explore ideas, suggesting a more creative or ideation-focused search interaction.
Google Search VP Robby Stein has confirmed these tests, clarifying that while the redesign introduces new AI entry points, it does not remove core Search functionality. Users can still type their queries into the search box and press Enter or Return to perform a standard search, indicating these AI features are an augmentation, not a replacement, for traditional search.
Google's Broader AI Integration
This initiative is another step in Google's ongoing effort to integrate AI more deeply into its ecosystem. The company already offers 'AI Mode' within Search, which enables complex question answering, image and PDF uploads, and conversational follow-up queries.
