Google has unveiled Fairwind, a new limited-access program designed to enhance cyber defense capabilities for governments and trusted partners. This initiative integrates advanced artificial intelligence tools, including Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber and CodeMender, to autonomously identify, verify, and remediate software vulnerabilities at an unprecedented scale.
Strengthening Critical Infrastructure Protection
The Fairwind program specifically targets critical infrastructure operators, national cyber authorities, and core technology platforms. Organizations across vital sectors such as healthcare, telecommunications, energy, and financial networks, alongside software foundations supporting millions of users, are among the initial participants. Google emphasizes that this program provides trusted defenders with an early advantage, enabling them to secure essential systems and public services before attackers can exploit emerging AI capabilities.
Currently, over 650 global partners are engaged in the program. Access comes with strict operational safeguards, limiting the tools to internal cybersecurity, incident response, or penetration-testing teams. Furthermore, robust protections like multi-factor authentication are mandatory for all users.
AI-Powered Vulnerability Remediation
At the heart of Fairwind lies the powerful combination of Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber—Google's most advanced cybersecurity model—and the CodeMender harness. This synergy allows organizations to conduct comprehensive vulnerability discovery, verify the effectiveness of proposed fixes, and generate deployment-ready patches directly within their secure cloud environments. Google anticipates this integration will drastically cut down remediation times, potentially reducing processes from weeks to mere minutes.
Performance metrics highlight the efficacy of these tools: Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber achieved a success rate exceeding 70% on Google's internal vulnerability benchmark, which spans 20 programming languages. On the industry-standard CWE-Bench, it recorded a 47.2% pass@1 score, closely matching leading frontier models while operating at significantly lower costs. Google's Chrome Security team also reported that it produced 2.6 times more correct patches compared to much larger commercial models.
Evolving Cyber Defense Ecosystem
Google plans to evolve Fairwind in collaboration with its partners, aiming to expand access while meticulously balancing openness with security. Beyond the Fairwind program, any Google Cloud customer can leverage CodeMender with publicly available models through the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, broadening the reach of these powerful tools.
The company's broader commitment to cybersecurity is underscored by over $100 million in global funding. This includes a notable $36 million allocated to 35 US cyber clinics, which provide crucial support to more than 1,250 hospitals, school districts, and municipal utilities, reinforcing the collective defense against cyber threats.
