Facebook Tests Video-First Interface in India, Shifting Focus to Reels

· · 2 min read

Meta is trialing a new full-screen video interface for Facebook in India, prioritizing Reels over the traditional News Feed. This shift aims to increase user watch time and enhance competition with platforms like YouTube Shorts.

Meta is currently experimenting with a significant redesign of the Facebook app interface in India, moving towards a video-first experience. This trial introduces a full-screen video interface, pushing content from Facebook Reels to the forefront, a notable departure from the platform's traditional text and photo-heavy News Feed.

The company's strategic shift intends to elevate video consumption and boost user engagement, particularly in a market as crucial as India, which represents Meta's largest user base globally. While the new interface is being tested with a limited group of users, Meta has clarified that the classic News Feed will not be removed entirely; it will remain accessible as a separate tab within the application for those who prefer the familiar experience.

According to reports, this initiative means that all video content uploaded to Facebook will be uniformly treated and shared as Reels, irrespective of its original length or format. By integrating a more prominent video experience, Meta aims to capture a larger share of watch time and strengthen its competitive position against rival short-form video platforms such, as YouTube Shorts, which have seen explosive growth.

As of now, the broader rollout of this video-centric user interface for Facebook remains unconfirmed. Meta has not yet announced specific timelines for when, or if, this redesigned experience will become widely available to all users in India or globally.
