Cursor Launches 'Start' AI Plan for India, Offers Affordable Coding Tools

· · 2 min read

AI coding startup Cursor has introduced 'Cursor Start,' an India-specific subscription plan offering premium AI features like Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.5 at a significantly reduced price. This move aims to expand Cursor's footprint in India, its third-largest global market.

AI coding startup Cursor has officially launched "Cursor Start," an exclusive and more affordable subscription tier tailored specifically for the Indian market. This strategic move aims to significantly expand the company's presence in India, a country that has rapidly emerged as Cursor's third-largest global market.

Affordable Access to Premium AI Coding Tools

The new Cursor Start plan is priced at Rs 649 per month, a substantial reduction compared to the standard Cursor Pro plan, which costs $20 per month (approximately Rs 1,700). This local pricing strategy makes advanced AI coding assistance far more accessible to Indian developers.

Despite its affordability, Cursor Start includes a robust suite of premium AI features essential for modern development workflows:

  • Cursor Composer 2.5: For advanced AI-assisted coding.
  • Grok 4.5 AI Model: A powerful AI model for various coding tasks.
  • Cloud Agents: Enabling enhanced collaboration and processing.
  • iOS App Access: For on-the-go coding support.
  • Plugins: To extend functionality and integrate with other tools.
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) Support: For deeper understanding of code context.
  • Hooks: To automate repetitive workflows.
  • Skills: For specialized coding capabilities.

Strategic Growth in a Key Market

Aman Sanger, founder of Cursor, highlighted India's growing importance in an X post, stating, "Our user base in India has tripled in the past year, with more agent requests per user than any other country." This surge in engagement underscores India's significance as a pivotal market for the company.

While Cursor Start offers substantial value, it is designed as an upgrade path from the free version and for users needing core AI coding assistance. It does not include access to frontier AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic, Auto Mode, or the Cursor SDK. Users seeking these advanced functionalities still have the option to upgrade to Cursor’s premium Pro plan.

Potential Acquisition by SpaceX

The launch of Cursor Start in India comes at a time of significant corporate activity for the company. Cursor is reportedly in advanced discussions to be acquired by Elon Musk's SpaceX in an all-stock transaction valued at $60 billion. This potential acquisition, expected to finalize later this quarter, is anticipated to bolster SpaceX's AI capabilities by integrating Cursor's innovative AI coding technology with its existing AI initiatives. The expansion into key markets like India could play a crucial role amid these potential ownership changes.
