Coursera CTO Replaces TikTok Habit with Ollie, New AI Learning App Using Social Media Playbook

Coursera's new AI-powered mobile app, Ollie, incorporates social media features like infinite scrolling and streaks to foster learning. CTO Mustafa Furniturewala notes it has replaced his TikTok use, aiming to build skills rather than encourage passive consumption.

Coursera has unveiled Ollie, a new AI-powered mobile app designed to transform how users acquire new skills by leveraging engagement mechanics typically found in social media platforms. Unlike traditional learning environments, Ollie aims to replace passive "doomscrolling" with active, bite-sized educational content.

Social Media's Playbook for Skill Building

Mustafa Furniturewala, Coursera's Chief Technology Officer, explained that the company approached Ollie's development by asking what Coursera would look like if built from scratch today. This led to a standalone app incorporating familiar features from platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Duolingo, including infinite scrolling, streaks, rewards, and leaderboards. However, these elements are repurposed to encourage continuous learning rather than endless, unproductive consumption.

"We heard stories from our learners that Ollie replaced some of their doomscrolling time. For me personally, it replaced some of my TikTok time," Furniturewala shared, highlighting the app's potential to shift user habits towards productive engagement.

Bite-Sized Learning Powered by AI

Ollie complements Coursera's existing course catalog by offering 90-second lessons, AI-generated explainers, interactive quizzes, and a conversational AI assistant. This format facilitates learning in short bursts throughout the day, aligning with modern mobile consumption habits. The app combines short video clips from Coursera's extensive library with dynamically generated AI lessons on emerging topics, allowing users to quickly grasp new concepts or understand current events.

Every video on Ollie is paired with reinforcing activities like quizzes and AI conversations, ensuring active participation and concept retention. Coursera's research indicates that shorter lessons combined with active practice significantly improve learning outcomes, addressing the challenge of maintaining attention during longer video formats.

AI at the Core of Development and Personalization

The AI-first philosophy extends beyond the user experience to Ollie's development. Furniturewala revealed that approximately 95% of the app's code was generated using AI tools. He emphasized, however, that experienced engineers remained crucial in directing the AI, preventing "AI slop" and ensuring production-quality software. Coursera leverages multiple foundation models, including those from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google's Gemini, fine-tuning them for specific teaching and learning applications.

Personalization is a cornerstone of Ollie. Upon onboarding, users share their interests, and the app continuously adjusts recommendations based on their viewing habits, skips, and quiz performance. "Every person's homepage should look different," Furniturewala stated, underscoring the hyper-personalized learning journey. Even the AI-generated lessons undergo a human review process, combining automated content creation with expert oversight to maintain quality.

Global Reach and Future Innovations

Currently available to Coursera Plus subscribers, Ollie is showing strong retention among Indian users, a market Coursera plans to further localize. While the immediate focus is on attracting new subscribers and improving retention, Ollie represents a significant step in AI innovation for Coursera. The company anticipates exploring different monetization methods as it continues to develop AI-driven learning solutions, signaling a broader strategy for the combined Coursera and Udemy entity.
