ChatGPT May Soon Get Chat Lock Feature for Private Conversations

· · 2 min read

OpenAI is reportedly developing a 'Chat Lock' feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to secure private conversations with a PIN or biometric authentication. This new functionality would save chats behind an extra security layer, unlike temporary conversations.

OpenAI is reportedly working on a significant new privacy feature for ChatGPT users: a 'Chat Lock' function. This upcoming capability would allow individuals to protect their private conversations within the AI chatbot using a PIN code or biometric authentication, such as a fingerprint scan.

Enhanced Privacy for ChatGPT Users

Currently, ChatGPT offers 'Temporary Chats' for sensitive discussions, which are not saved to the user's history and disappear after the conversation concludes. The anticipated 'Chat Lock' feature, however, is designed differently. Instead of making a conversation temporary, it would allow users to retain their chat history while securing it behind an additional layer of authentication, ensuring that only the authorized user can access it.

Code Discovery Hints at Development

The existence of this potential feature was brought to light by an Android Authority report, which indicated that inactive code referencing 'locked chats' and 'Protect chats' was discovered within the latest ChatGPT Android application. This suggests that OpenAI is actively experimenting with or developing such a chat-locking mechanism.

Interaction with ChatGPT's Memory Feature

There is also speculation regarding how the 'Chat Lock' feature would interact with ChatGPT's 'Memory' function. The discovered code reportedly implies that information contained within a locked chat would remain confined to that specific conversation. This means that even if a user has the Memory feature enabled, ChatGPT would likely not utilize details from a locked conversation to inform future interactions outside of that particular secured chat.

Uncertainty Surrounds Official Launch

It is important to note that because the feature was found in inactive code, its official launch is not guaranteed. OpenAI could potentially modify the feature, decide against releasing it, or delay its implementation. Users will need to await an official announcement from OpenAI to confirm the availability of this new privacy tool.

Should the 'Chat Lock' feature be introduced, it could prove invaluable for many ChatGPT users who frequently discuss personal questions, medical queries, job applications, or other sensitive information that they wish to keep private and not easily accessible to others.
