OpenAI Introduces Computer History for Mac

OpenAI has officially launched a new Computer History feature for its ChatGPT desktop application on macOS. This innovative tool is designed to enhance the AI's ability to understand user context by allowing it to reference past activity across selected applications and websites.

The Computer History feature is opt-in, meaning it is disabled by default. Users must actively choose to enable it, giving them control over their privacy from the outset. Once activated, it helps ChatGPT recall previous interactions, find specific information, and resume tasks more seamlessly.

What is Computer History?

Essentially, Computer History acts as an extended memory for ChatGPT, providing the AI with a deeper understanding of a user's recent work. Instead of repeatedly explaining ongoing projects or previously accessed documents, ChatGPT can leverage this historical data to offer more relevant and informed responses. It creates a timeline of user activity, converting it into 'memories' that the AI can reference in future conversations.

How Does the Feature Work?

The system operates by collecting interaction events from permitted applications and websites. These events include actions such as clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts, and switching between different apps. Periodically, these events are converted into concise text summaries and stored in local memory files on the user's Mac.

Users can then prompt ChatGPT with questions like, "What was I working on before my break?" or "Where did I view that document?" The AI can also identify repetitive workflows and suggest turning them into automated skills. Crucially, the feature does not capture screenshots, screen recordings, microphone input, system audio, or activity from private-mode web browsing.

Who Can Access Computer History?

This new capability is available to subscribers of ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans using the Mac desktop app. Pro users can enable the feature themselves, while Business and Enterprise users require administrator access to activate it. It's important to note that Computer History is currently unavailable in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

There is no additional charge for Computer History; it is included as an optional component of eligible ChatGPT subscriptions.

Important Considerations Before Enabling

Before opting into Computer History, users are strongly advised to review the list of applications and websites that will be included in their activity history. This is particularly important for apps or sites that handle sensitive personal, financial, or other private information, ensuring users maintain control over their data.
