Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a significant expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) software development portfolio, introducing new capabilities for Amazon Bedrock, Kiro, and Strands Agents. These updates are designed to empower developers to build sophisticated AI applications more efficiently, particularly within enterprise environments.
Streamlining Enterprise AI Development
Jeff Barr, Chief Evangelist at AWS, highlighted the company's focus on shifting developers from extensive coding to defining business requirements and validating software. Barr noted that while early AI coding tools facilitated rapid application building, enterprise software demands a more structured approach.
“About a year ago, the major trend was what many people called 'vibe coding'. It was an important step forward because it gave developers experience with delegating part of the development process to AI tools,” Barr explained. “But as developers move from building small projects to medium, large and eventually enterprise-scale applications, they need ways to organise and manage that process effectively.”
Kiro: An Agentic Development Environment
AWS has integrated this structured approach into Kiro, its agentic development environment. Developers initiate projects by describing the problem they wish to solve. Kiro then generates requirements, design documents, and implementation tasks before producing code. This allows developers to review each stage, deciding whether AI should execute the tasks or if further modifications are necessary.
Barr emphasized that the tool augments a developer's skills rather than replacing them. “The better the developer understands the customer, the use case and the desired solution, the better the results will be. The tool amplifies the developer's skills and efforts rather than replacing them,” he stated.
The Evolving Role of Developers
AI is fundamentally reshaping the role of software developers, enabling them to adopt a broader perspective as problem-solvers rather than mere coders. “Developers who can communicate clearly, articulate challenges effectively and collaborate well with AI systems have a distinct advantage,” Barr added.
This shift was evident in AIdeas 10,000, AWS's global competition where developers leveraged Kiro and the AWS Free Tier to build AI applications. The competition drew participants from 115 countries, with entries spanning healthcare, education, sustainability, and enterprise software.
“What stood out was that developers weren't just building prototypes. They were building production-ready applications,” Barr remarked.
Innovation from India: The Veloquity Platform
Among the standout applications was Veloquity, developed by Athelesh B., an Electrical and Electronics Engineering student from India and the Asia-Pacific regional winner. Veloquity is an Agentic AI-powered platform designed to help organizations make data-driven decisions from vast amounts of information.
Athelesh explained, “The real problem is not the lack of information. Organisations lack a layer that can transform massive amounts of information into reliable decisions.” He cited healthcare as an example, where Veloquity can analyze thousands of patient comments and observations, helping administrators identify breakdowns in the patient journey and prioritize improvements.
The student developer also highlighted the dramatic reduction in development effort thanks to AI. “If I compare this to five years ago, building a complex multi-agent AI system would have taken six to seven months and required hiring a team of four or five engineers. Today, I have been able to build it alone as a single developer,” he shared.
Kiro played a crucial role in structuring the development process, converting high-level intent into a clear plan. “It makes the development process more transparent, allowing us to understand, verify and iterate on each step,” Athelesh concluded.
India's Growing Developer Ecosystem
India remains a vital market for AWS's developer ecosystem, with over 10 million people trained in cloud skills since 2017. Barr noted the proficiency of Indian developers in multiple technologies and programming languages, coupled with a strong drive to build impactful solutions, positioning them well to benefit from advanced AI development tools.
