Apple's long-standing virtual assistant, Siri, is reportedly on the cusp of a major transformation. After years of ambitious promises and missed deadlines, the company is poised to unveil significant AI-driven enhancements at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8, 2026. This overhaul follows a period of intense pressure from competitors and an internal leadership shakeup within Apple's AI division.
Siri's Evolution: A Decade of Development
Siri first debuted with the iPhone 4S on October 14, 2011, heralded as the first AI voice assistant on a smartphone. Its capabilities expanded steadily in the following years. Between 2012 and 2014, Apple brought Siri to the iPad with iOS 6 and added features like sports scores, restaurant reservations, and movie listings.
A notable advancement came in 2014 with iOS 8, introducing "Hey Siri," enabling hands-free activation. By 2016, with iOS 10, Apple opened Siri to third-party applications such as WhatsApp and Uber, significantly broadening its utility. That same year, Siri integrated into Mac devices via macOS Sierra and later found its way into the HomePod, receiving machine learning upgrades to enhance voice naturalness.
The Generative AI Race and Siri's Lag
The landscape of artificial intelligence shifted dramatically between 2022 and 2024 with the rapid rise of generative AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT, followed by Google and Anthropic's advanced offerings. This surge intensified competition and highlighted Siri's growing lag in capabilities compared to these newer, more dynamic AI platforms.
At WWDC 2024, Apple announced "Apple Intelligence" and an overhauled Siri, promising context-aware interactions across apps. However, several key features, including deeper app integration and the ability to perform cross-app actions, were delayed beyond the initial iOS 18 launch, pushing their availability to subsequent updates.
Leadership Changes Amidst AI Upgrade Failures
The challenges culminated in a high-stakes internal meeting in early 2025, reportedly prompted by the shortcomings of Siri's AI upgrade. A Bloomberg report indicated that Apple CEO Tim Cook had "lost confidence" in artificial intelligence chief John Giannandrea's ability to execute product development effectively.
As a result, Mike Rockwell, formerly the head of Apple's Vision Pro division, has been appointed as the new leader for the revamped Siri project. Paul Meade, a hardware engineer on the Vision Pro team, is expected to assume Rockwell's previous responsibilities. Employees were reportedly informed of these significant organizational changes recently.

Expectations are high for WWDC 2026, where Apple is anticipated to finally deliver on its delayed promises. The company is expected to showcase an AI-enabled Siri, potentially featuring integration with Google's Gemini AI. Furthermore, Apple is rumored to preview a dedicated Siri application with a chatbot-like interface, allowing users to ask queries and review conversation history.
While these features are expected to be previewed in June 2026, the official rollout and full availability of the new Siri capabilities may not occur until September 2026.
