Apple's Siri to Avoid Companion Role as 27% Americans Rely on AI for Emotional Support

· · 3 min read

A new study reveals over 27% of Americans use AI chatbots like ChatGPT for emotional reasons and companionship. In response, Apple executives state Siri AI will be strictly a functional tool, designed to avoid engaging in personal or romantic interactions.

A new study highlights a growing trend of Americans turning to artificial intelligence chatbots for emotional companionship, rather than just practical assistance. However, Apple is taking a distinct stance, with executives confirming that its Siri AI will deliberately avoid engaging in personal or romantic interactions, positioning it strictly as a functional tool.

Americans Seek Emotional Support from AI Chatbots

Research conducted by Elon University in partnership with The Washington Post reveals a significant shift in how people interact with AI. The study indicates that over 27% of Americans now use AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, for personal and emotional reasons. This usage extends beyond factual queries or work-related tasks, encompassing relationship advice, romantic conversations, entertainment, and even addressing feelings of loneliness.

Alarmingly, nearly one-third of these users consider the AI chatbot they interact with most frequently to be a friend. This growing reliance on artificial intelligence for emotional needs raises questions about its potential impact on genuine human connections and the boundaries between technology and personal relationships.

Apple's Siri: A Different Path

In contrast to this trend, Apple executives Greg Joswiak and Craig Federighi have outlined a deliberate strategy for Siri AI. Speaking on the "Mostly Human" podcast earlier this year, they emphasized that Siri is being designed to avoid the "sycophantic" engagement often seen in other chatbots that seek to draw users into deeper, personal revelations.

"If you use many of the existing chatbots, they’re really focused on engagement to a large degree. And sycophantic, right? They kind of want to pull you in. They might encourage you to reveal things about yourself and then use that as a basis to establish a connection," Federighi explained. "And we view it quite the opposite."

Apple's vision for Siri is rooted in utility. "The way that we have designed Siri, Siri really wants to say, 'Listen, that’s not what I’m here for. I’m here to help you. I can help you learn about the world.' But if you try to engage Siri as a romantic partner, Siri’s not up for that," Joswiak added.

Protecting Privacy and Promoting Human Connection

This strategic decision by Apple positions Siri as a straightforward assistant, focused on enhancing productivity and facilitating learning, rather than blurring the lines of personal relationships. The company aims for technology to serve as an aid without becoming a substitute for human interaction.

By restricting Siri's engagement with personal queries, Apple intends to help protect user privacy and encourage individuals to seek genuine human connections for their emotional needs. This approach underscores a commitment to maintaining clear boundaries between artificial intelligence and the complexities of human emotion and relationships.
