· · 2 min read

Images have surfaced revealing smart home devices reportedly developed by LG in collaboration with Apple. The lineup includes a smart deadbolt lock, thermostat, and various cameras, indicating a broader expansion of Apple's Home ecosystem without direct Apple branding on these accessories.

New details and images have emerged, offering a glimpse into a significant expansion of Apple's smart home strategy. The tech giant is reportedly collaborating with LG Electronics on a range of connected home accessories, including a smart lock, thermostat, and various cameras, which are expected to integrate seamlessly into Apple's Home ecosystem.

A Unique Partnership: Apple Design, LG Manufacturing

This partnership is notable because the new devices are anticipated to carry LG branding, with LG handling the manufacturing, development, and customer support. Apple's involvement is primarily in the design, feature set, and engineering aspects, suggesting a strategic move for Apple to broaden its smart home offerings without directly producing every piece of hardware.

Upcoming Devices: Lock, Thermostat, and Cameras

The leaked images and information detail several key products:

  • LG Smart Deadbolt Lock: This advanced lock reportedly features a rotating keypad for opening, support for automatic unlocking, tap-to-unlock functionality, emergency power options, and master codes. It's also expected to include Ultra Wideband (UWB) for proximity-based automatic unlocking and settings for touchpad light rings and door-open alerts.
  • LG Smart Thermostat & Temperature Sensor: The thermostat is described with a large temperature display, offering features like a Far Sight Display, humidity information, brightness controls, and language settings. A separate, magnetic temperature sensor capable of measuring temperature and humidity is also part of the lineup.
  • Video Doorbell & Cameras: The accessories list includes a wired video doorbell, indoor and outdoor cameras, and a floodlight camera, all designed to enhance home security and monitoring within the Apple Home environment.

Seamless Integration with Apple's Home Ecosystem

These LG-made accessories are designed to support modern smart home communication protocols, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, and Matter. This broad compatibility ensures they can connect effortlessly with existing and future smart home setups. Apple is also rumored to be developing a new smart home hub with a 6-inch square display, intended to serve as a central interface for its expanded Home ecosystem.

While the designs have surfaced, reports indicate that these LG-branded devices are still several months away from launch. Their arrival would mark a significant step for Apple in solidifying its presence in the competitive smart home market by leveraging external manufacturing expertise for a diverse range of integrated products.
