Apple Pauses Plan to Replace Over 5,000 AppleCare Jobs with AI

· · 2 min read

Apple reportedly explored replacing over 5,000 AppleCare customer support roles with AI agents as part of a broader efficiency push under new CEO John Ternus. While the plan is currently on hold, it signals a significant shift towards automated service.

Apple reportedly considered a major restructuring of its customer support division, with plans to replace more than 5,000 AppleCare jobs with artificial intelligence. This move was part of a larger initiative by the company to streamline operations and enhance efficiency, especially under the leadership of new CEO John Ternus.

According to a Bloomberg report, the proposed workforce reduction involving AI-powered phone and web support agents was intended to automate tasks currently handled by human AppleCare employees. However, the tech giant has indefinitely paused these layoff plans, meaning the immediate cuts will not proceed.

Broader Organizational Overhaul Underway

The proposal to integrate AI into AppleCare support is reportedly part of a more extensive organizational overhaul spearheaded by CEO John Ternus. This broader effort includes restructuring various teams and reconsidering product launch strategies.

Apple has already begun implementing AI solutions in its customer service. Customers in the US and Canada who call Apple Support may encounter an AI voice assistant designed to answer questions and provide guidance. While this system can transfer calls to human agents when necessary, it highlights Apple's increasing reliance on AI for initial customer interactions.

Impact Beyond AppleCare

Beyond the AppleCare AI proposal, Apple is also undergoing restructuring in other critical divisions. Reports indicate changes within the hardware engineering division, including the elimination of some engineering program management roles. Approximately six directors were among those affected by these adjustments.

Job cuts have also been noted in teams associated with Siri, Vision Pro, and AI software development. These changes reflect a company-wide effort to optimize resources and focus on strategic priorities.

Future of Product Launches

In addition to team restructuring, Apple is reportedly planning to accelerate product development cycles and modify its product launch schedule. This could mean spreading product announcements throughout the year, rather than concentrating them primarily during the traditional spring and fall events. This shift aims to create a more consistent flow of new products and updates.

While the immediate plan for AppleCare AI job cuts is on hold, the consideration of such a significant number of replacements underscores Apple's commitment to exploring AI's potential in customer service. The company may revisit these strategies as its AI support systems mature and become more capable.
