CUPERTINO, CA – After more than 15 years at the helm, Tim Cook is transitioning from his role as Apple’s Chief Executive Officer, effective August 31, 2026. John Ternus, currently Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will succeed Cook as CEO, beginning September 1, 2026.

Apple recently organized a farewell event on August 23, 2026, at the company’s Caffè Macs cafeteria to honor Cook's remarkable 15-year tenure. The gathering saw approximately 200 Apple employees and distinguished guests in attendance, including Laurene Powell Jobs, the wife of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, former Apple COO Jeff Williams, and current Services chief Eddy Cue. John Ternus also participated, paying tribute to Cook's leadership.
The event featured a performance by the band OneRepublic, adding a celebratory note to the occasion. During his remarks, Cook acknowledged his partner, Mike, a rare public mention of his personal life, noted by attendees familiar with the event.
New Roles and Future Product Launches
While stepping down as CEO, Tim Cook will not be entirely departing Apple. He will assume the role of Apple’s executive chairman, focusing on engagement with governments and policymakers worldwide. This strategic move suggests Apple's intent to maintain Cook's valuable experience and relationships in a crucial advisory capacity. Cook’s executive assistant will also transition to work with Ternus, indicating a desire to preserve operational continuity.
The transition comes as Apple prepares for a significant product launch cycle in September. Under Ternus's new leadership, the company is expected to unveil new iPhone 18 Pro models and its highly anticipated first foldable device, reportedly named the iPhone Ultra. Additionally, the iOS 27 update, featuring a revamped Siri and advanced AI capabilities, is slated for release, with Ternus anticipated to lead these announcements at the upcoming Apple event.
