Apple AirPods with Camera Revealed in macOS Update, Hinting at AI Visual Intelligence

· · 3 min read

A leaked macOS video has revealed Apple's upcoming camera-equipped AirPods, designed to enhance Siri's understanding of users' surroundings through Visual Intelligence. This feature could allow the earbuds to identify and save information from the environment.

Apple appears to be developing a new iteration of its AirPods, potentially featuring integrated cameras. A video discovered within a recent macOS software release offers the clearest indication yet of these camera-equipped earbuds and how their visual capabilities might function, suggesting a significant leap in AI integration for the popular audio device.

Visual Intelligence for Enhanced Siri Interaction

The discovery was made in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate. A brief demonstration video showcases the new AirPods in action, depicting a user holding a book for the earbuds' camera to scan its title. A voiceover in the clip explains that a feature called "Visual Intelligence" will enable the AirPods to make elements in your surroundings "savable" for later reference.

Further evidence supports this development, with the software containing multiple references to the product's internal codename, B790. This codename had previously been linked to camera-equipped AirPods by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Notably, one reference specifically details the setup process for Visual Intelligence on the AirPods.

Operational Details and User Experience

The leaked software also provides insights into the operational requirements for these advanced earbuds. It indicates that the AirPods will need to remain unobstructed for the Visual Intelligence feature to function accurately. Users may receive alerts if elements like hair or other obstructions cover the AirPods, as such interference could compromise the system's ability to interpret environmental information correctly.

Beyond Photography: The Role of the Cameras

Crucially, these cameras are not being presented as a means for users to take photographs. Instead, their primary purpose appears to be feeding visual data directly into Apple's Visual Intelligence system. This information would then empower Siri to answer questions about objects or scenes a user is observing, or to recall specific details from their environment without constant reliance on a paired iPhone. The demonstration involving the book title exemplifies this, showing the system's capacity to recognize and store information.

Potential Launch and Future Outlook

According to reports from Gurman, these B790 AirPods could potentially be unveiled as early as September. This timeline would align with Apple's anticipated launch events for new iPhone models, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a rumored foldable iPhone. However, Apple has not yet officially confirmed the existence of these camera-equipped AirPods or provided any official launch dates.

It's important to note that the B790 project is distinct from an earlier B798 camera-equipped AirPods initiative, which has reportedly been postponed until 2027, suggesting a refined approach to this innovative technology.
