Anthropic has rolled out a significant update for its Claude artificial intelligence assistant, introducing a shared memory system that bridges the gap between Claude Chat and Claude Cowork. Announced on August 25, 2026, this enhancement aims to make the AI experience more cohesive and intuitive for users.
Seamless Transitions Between AI Tasks
Previously, users often faced the frustration of re-explaining projects or contexts when moving from a conversation in Claude Chat to an action-oriented task in Claude Cowork. The new shared memory feature eliminates this redundancy, allowing Claude to retain information discussed in one module and apply it in the other. This means if you've brainstormed a conference agenda with Claude Chat, Cowork can leverage those details—like attendee numbers, location, and speakers—when asked to draft an update for your manager.
The update positions Claude as a more continuous and unified assistant rather than a collection of separate tools. Information will now be added to Claude's memory as you chat, rather than waiting for a conversation to conclude, ensuring that data is consistently up-to-date and accessible across both Chat and Cowork experiences.
Enhanced User Control Over Memory
Anthropic is also empowering users with greater control over what information Claude remembers. By default, the AI assistant is designed not to store sensitive personal data such as health information, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, political views, or gender identity. However, users have the option to enable an “include sensitive topics in memory” setting if they wish for Claude to retain such details, with the application providing notifications when sensitive topics are saved.
It's important to note that certain highly sensitive information, including government-issued identification, Social Security numbers, criminal history, and immigration status, will never be saved by Claude, regardless of user settings.
This memory feature is now active by default for all Free, Pro, and Max users across web, desktop, and mobile platforms. iPhone and Android users will need to update their Claude app to the latest version to access the new capabilities.
