India's technology job market is undergoing a significant transformation, with specialized Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills now commanding higher salaries than traditional years of experience. A recent report by 1 Finance Research highlights this shift, indicating that AI professionals are earning substantially more across all career levels.
AI Expertise Drives Salary Premiums
The study, which analyzed 950 job postings across major Indian tech hubs like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, found a clear premium for AI-related roles. Professionals with 0-3 years of experience in AI earn an average of ₹6 lakh per annum, a 20% increase compared to the ₹5 lakh earned by those in traditional IT jobs with similar experience.
This pay gap widens considerably with increasing seniority. Employees boasting 3-5 years of experience in AI roles average ₹12 lakh, outperforming their traditional IT peers who earn ₹9 lakh. For those with 5-10 years of experience, AI specialists bring in ₹22 lakh annually, while traditional IT professionals receive ₹17 lakh. At the senior level, individuals with over 10 years of experience in AI-related roles command an average of ₹36 lakh annually, a striking 38% more than the ₹26 lakh earned in conventional IT positions.
“The industry's biggest divide is no longer between junior and senior professionals, but between those with AI capabilities and those without them,” states the 1 Finance Research report, underscoring a fundamental shift in hiring priorities.
Experience Alone No Longer Guarantees Higher Pay
For decades, career progression in India's IT sector was largely tied to seniority. However, the report suggests this paradigm is changing. Employers are increasingly valuing specific AI capabilities over accumulated years in conventional technology roles. This means a professional with five years of experience in AI or machine learning could potentially earn more than someone with 15 years in traditional software development if the latter lacks relevant AI skills.
Growing Demand Outstrips Supply
The discussion around AI often focuses on job displacement, but the data points to a different trend: AI is reshaping salary structures by rewarding scarce skills. Demand for AI talent in India is growing at approximately 25% annually, while the supply is increasing at a slower rate of 15%. This creates a persistent shortage of skilled professionals.
NASSCOM projects India's AI talent pool to double to 1.25 million by 2027, yet demand is still expected to exceed supply. Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are further exacerbating this trend, offering 12-20% higher salaries than traditional IT firms, with premiums soaring to 30-50% for AI and data specialists. Notably, 64% of new GCC roles now explicitly require AI, data, or automation skills.
These findings underscore the critical importance of continuous learning for technology professionals. As companies fiercely compete for AI talent, specialized skills are emerging as a more potent determinant of earning potential than experience alone, signaling a broad and ongoing transformation in India's technology employment landscape.
