India's data center sector is entering an unprecedented phase of growth, with artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and burgeoning digital services driving a massive $90 billion investment pipeline. This surge is poised to transform India into a global hub for digital infrastructure, though it also brings significant sustainability challenges.
Hyperscale Expansion and Investment Surge
According to a report by Rubix Data Sciences, the announced investment pipeline is nearly six times larger than the $13-15 billion invested between 2020 and 2024, signaling a rapid shift towards hyperscale infrastructure development. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology estimates current announced investments at approximately $90 billion, with potential for AI-led digital infrastructure to catalyze up to $200 billion in the coming years.
Despite generating nearly 20% of the world's data, India currently holds only 3-4% of global installed data center capacity. This gap presents a significant opportunity for expansion. Projections indicate India's installed data center capacity will soar from 1.5 GW in 2025 to an impressive 6.5 GW by 2030. Capacity additions are already accelerating, with 387 MW of IT capacity added in 2025, a 103% increase year-on-year.
Global Players and Key Drivers
Major global hyperscalers are leading much of this investment. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google have collectively committed around $67.5 billion in India, solidifying the nation's strategic importance for AI and cloud infrastructure. As of January 2026, India had 271 operational data centers, with Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Chennai hosting nearly 65% of these facilities.
Beyond AI workloads and rapid cloud adoption, other key drivers include the 5G rollout, widespread adoption of digital payments via UPI, and the expansion of e-commerce and OTT platforms. India also benefits from a notable cost advantage, with data center construction estimated to be 30-40% cheaper than in countries like China and the US.
Sustainability Concerns Amidst Rapid Growth
The rapid expansion, however, raises critical sustainability questions. India's data centers currently consume an estimated 150 billion liters of water annually, a figure projected to increase to nearly 359 billion liters by 2030. Compounding this issue, over half of these facilities are located in water-stressed regions.
Electricity demand from the sector is also set to skyrocket, from approximately 1 GW currently to 13.56 GW by 2031-32. This places immense pressure on the country's power infrastructure, even as operators increasingly transition towards renewable energy sources.
“India's data centre industry has moved past its early growth phase and is now in the middle of a large-scale, AI-driven investment cycle,” said Tushar Bhaskar, President of Rubix Data Sciences. He emphasized that “the sector's long-term competitiveness will depend not only on attracting investment but also on addressing constraints around power availability, water use and sustainability while building AI-ready digital infrastructure.”
As India positions itself as a global digital powerhouse, balancing ambitious growth with sustainable practices will be paramount for the long-term success of its booming data center industry.
