AI investment firm Activate has announced its backing of voice artificial intelligence startup ElevenLabs, marking the venture firm's inaugural growth-stage investment since its launch earlier this year. The undisclosed investment was facilitated through a dedicated strategic vehicle focused on late-stage global AI companies with strong ties to India.
ElevenLabs, founded in 2022, specializes in developing advanced AI models for speech synthesis, dubbing, and conversational voice agents. The company recently achieved an $11 billion valuation in its Series D financing round, led by ICONIQ Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, with additional strategic investments from industry giants like Nvidia and BlackRock.
Expanding Voice AI in India
As part of this new partnership, Activate will collaborate closely with ElevenLabs to bolster its footprint across India. This initiative includes actively supporting startups and enterprises that are building innovative products and solutions utilizing ElevenLabs' sophisticated voice AI platform.
India has rapidly emerged as a critical market for ElevenLabs, now ranking as its second-largest globally by revenue. This rapid adoption underscores the country's readiness for advanced AI technologies.
Aakrit Vaish, founder of Activate, emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration: "Voice AI is going to be the defining AI opportunity for India. At Activate, our mission is to not simply invest in Indian startups, but to help build the ecosystem around them. This means connecting global AI leaders with the country's best builders."
Mati Staniszewski, co-founder of ElevenLabs, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the unique innovation emerging from the region. "India is one of our largest markets and one of the fastest globally to adopt voice AI," Staniszewski stated. "Besides the scale, what stands out are the innovative ways that builders and enterprises across India are deploying the technology."
The Future of Voice Technology
The investment signifies a strong belief in India's potential to lead in voice AI innovation. Both Activate and ElevenLabs are poised to capitalize on the country's burgeoning digital landscape and its rapid adoption of AI-driven solutions, particularly in areas like localized content creation, assistive technologies, and enhanced user interfaces.
