Star Indian batter Virat Kohli has made history by becoming only the second player ever to cross the 15,000-run mark in One Day International (ODI) cricket. The monumental achievement came during the opening ODI against the West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
Kohli reached the milestone in his 303rd ODI innings, making him significantly faster than cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who took 377 innings to achieve the same feat in 2007. Kohli brought up his 15,000th run with a stylish pull shot for four off Alzarri Joseph, acknowledging the cheering crowd with raised arms.
A Historic Century to Mark the Occasion
Not content with just the run-scoring milestone, Virat Kohli also celebrated by smashing his record-extending 55th ODI century in the same match. He reached his half-century off just 40 balls and then completed his hundred from 74 deliveries, hitting a six over Gudakesh Motie's head to reach three figures. His innings was studded with six sixes and six fours, further solidifying his position as the batter with the most centuries in the format.
Kohli Joins Elite Company in ODI History
With this achievement, Kohli now stands second in the all-time list of ODI run-scorers, trailing only Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the record with 18,426 runs. Kohli had previously surpassed former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara (14,243 runs) in October 2025 to claim the second spot.
