Shubman Gill Sets New ODI Record with Fastest Double Century in 117 Balls

· · 2 min read

Indian captain Shubman Gill made history against West Indies, hitting the fastest double century in One Day International cricket in just 117 balls. He broke teammate Ishan Kishan's previous record of 126 balls, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill etched his name in the record books on Wednesday, smashing the fastest double century in One Day International (ODI) history. His sensational innings of 200 runs came off just 117 balls during the second ODI against West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

Gill's remarkable feat surpassed the previous record held by his teammate Ishan Kishan, who had reached the 200-run mark in 126 balls against Bangladesh in 2022. This historic knock further solidifies Gill's reputation as one of the most exciting talents in modern cricket.

An Explosive Innings of Records

Shubman Gill displayed incredible aggression and precision throughout his innings. He reached his century in a brisk 62 balls, a milestone that also marked the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian captain. After crossing the triple-figure mark, Gill accelerated dramatically, continuing to dominate the West Indies bowling attack.

His double century was adorned with 24 powerful fours and seven towering sixes, showcasing a masterful blend of timing and brute force. This achievement also marked Gill's second consecutive ODI century on Indian soil, following his 110 in the first match of the series in Thiruvananthapuram.

Joining Elite Company

With this latest double century, Shubman Gill joins an exclusive club, becoming only the second batter after the legendary Rohit Sharma to score multiple double hundreds in men's ODI cricket. Gill's first ODI double century was achieved against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023, highlighting his consistent ability to play monumental innings.

Match Context and West Indies' Challenge

Gill's record-breaking performance came during India's challenging chase of a colossal 406-run target set by West Indies. The visitors had posted an imposing 405/7, their highest ODI total against India, thanks to centuries from John Campbell (101), captain Shai Hope (104), and Amir Jangoo (114).

India entered the second ODI with a 1-0 lead in the series, having secured an eight-wicket victory in the opener where Gill contributed 110 runs and Virat Kohli remained unbeaten with 139.
