Young fast bowler Sakib Hussain made a memorable Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad, impressing fans and pundits alike. Displaying remarkable composure and skill, Hussain recorded figures of 4 wickets for just 24 runs, a performance that equals the best bowling figures by an Indian player on IPL debut.
Hussain’s impactful spell, which included the crucial dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the Rajasthan Royals innings, drew praise from former New Zealand bowler Mitchell McClenaghan. McClenaghan highlighted Hussain’s fearless approach and his ability to bowl deceptive slow off-cutters, comparing his style to that of Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman.
A Journey Forged in Adversity
While Sakib Hussain now shines on the IPL's grand stage, his path to professional cricket was fraught with immense challenges. Hailing from the Gopalganj district in Bihar, his childhood was marked by severe poverty, where even securing daily meals was a struggle.
"Khone ke liye to kuch nahi hai, paane ke liye bas yehi hai. Jo karna hai so yehi karenge," Sakib shared, reflecting on his determination. (I have nothing to lose, and all there is to gain is this... so I will continue to pursue this and give my best.)
The cost of essential cricket equipment often posed an insurmountable barrier for his family. A pair of cricket spikes, crucial for a fast bowler, was a luxury they could ill afford.
"Cricket spikes cost between Rs 10,000-15,000. If my father bought me spikes, then where would we able to eat the next meal from?" Sakib recalled the harsh reality.
Mother's Sacrifice Paved the Way
The turning point in Sakib’s early career came through an extraordinary act of sacrifice by his mother, Subuktara Khatoon. Faced with her son's plea for spikes to continue playing, and with no other means, she made a difficult choice.
"One day Sakib came to me and said, ‘Mummy, I don’t have spikes. How will I be able to continue playing cricket?’ I didn’t have the money required to buy the spikes. I had to sell my jewellery to buy him the spikes," his mother recounted, highlighting the depth of her commitment.
The family's financial woes were compounded by his father, Ali Ahmed Hussain, a farmer, who suffered a debilitating knee injury. This left him unable to work, plunging the family further into hardship.
"I got unwell, after which it was difficult to even manage one square meal," Ali Ahmed explained, emphasizing the dire situation.
Despite the overwhelming odds, Sakib's parents saw his dedication and talent as their best hope. His father described their decision to support his cricket as "not just hope, but a calculated risk."
Future Aspirations and Raw Pace
Sakib Hussain's debut performance, where he was trusted with bowling in both the Powerplay and death overs, is a testament to the faith placed in his abilities. This trust is a reflection of his relentless hard work and the sacrifices made to get him to this point.
Looking ahead, Sakib is focused on enhancing his pace, a critical attribute for any fast bowler.
"Now I am able to reach speeds north of 140 kph. Next season, I am confident that I will be able to breach the 150 kph mark," he stated, setting ambitious goals for his promising career.
Sakib Hussain's journey from the challenging fields of Bihar to the bright lights of the IPL stands as an inspiring narrative of talent, resilience, and profound family support.
