Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clinched a dominant 32-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday. The architect of CSK's success was Afghan left-arm wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad, whose sensational spell of 3-21 turned the tide decisively in his team's favor.
Ahmad's Crucial Breakthroughs Halt KKR Chase
Chasing a challenging target of 193, KKR's innings faltered despite a promising start. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane (28 off 22 balls), initially looking to anchor the chase, became Noor Ahmad's first victim, caught at mid-off. This wicket triggered a significant collapse for KKR. Ahmad then quickly dismissed an out-of-form Cameron Green and, in his very next over, removed the dangerous 'finisher' Rinku Singh, caught in the deep, effectively sealing KKR's fate.
Although Rovman Powell and Ramandeep Singh attempted to add some respectability to the score towards the end, KKR ultimately fell short by 32 runs, unable to recover from Ahmad's precision bowling.
CSK's Batting Prowess Sets Strong Total
Earlier in the match, CSK's batting unit laid a solid foundation, posting a formidable total of 192 for 5. Opening batsman Sanju Samson led the charge with a brisk 48 off 32 balls, including a hat-trick of boundaries off medium-pacer Vaibhav Arora. However, the standout performance came from the young No. 3 batsman, Ayush Mhatre, who blazed his way to 38 runs off just 17 deliveries.
Mhatre's aggressive innings saw him take 21 runs off an over from Cameron Green and hit three consecutive boundaries off Vaibhav Arora, providing CSK with crucial momentum. His quickfire knock ensured that CSK reached a competitive total, putting pressure on the KKR batsmen from the outset.
Powerplay Dominance and KKR's Struggle
CSK's control extended beyond the middle overs, as they dominated both batting and bowling powerplays. While batting, Samson and Mhatre propelled them to 72 runs in the initial overs. With the ball, CSK's pacers, Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj, made early inroads. They exploited the swinging conditions, dismissing KKR's new opening pair of Sunil Narine and Finn Allen.
