Former Indian cricketer Munaf Patel has voiced strong support for current men's cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir, emphasizing that Gambhir’s direct and honest communication style, though often unpopular, is essential for maintaining discipline within the squad. Speaking on the TOI Sports' Bombay Sport Exchange Podcast, Patel highlighted Gambhir's unique ability to manage players effectively.
Gambhir's Integrity and Control
Patel underscored Gambhir's integrity, stating, "He is a genuine person; he calls the truth as it is and many people don’t like that." He further elaborated that Gambhir's commitment to cricket, rather than financial gain, commands respect and fear among players, making him indispensable in a leadership role. "Gambhir is the only one who’s handling the players today. Other than him, the players won’t be handled by other coaches," Patel asserted.
During his tenure, Gautam Gambhir has led India to three significant titles: the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup, and T20 World Cup. However, recent scrutiny over India's Test cricket performance has sparked discussions about his position, particularly after the Border-Gavaskar series loss in 2024-25, which saw veteran players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retire from the format.
A Coach, Not a Friend
Munaf Patel, a member of India's 2011 World Cup-winning team alongside Gambhir, stressed that a coach's role should involve firm control, not friendship, to uphold the team's system. He praised Gambhir's courage to make tough decisions, including dropping players when necessary. "If Gambhir leaves after three years, then you will see things become more scattered. Because he can keep control... he has the guts to drop players," Patel added.
Patel also acknowledged the challenges Gambhir faces due to his outspoken nature, noting that many within the cricketing fraternity, including commentators and selectors, might oppose him. "Think about it—how many enemies Gautam Gambhir is making while doing this job. In commentary panel, 8 out of 10 people are against him. 4 out of 5 selectors will be against him. But still, he does his work," Patel concluded, reinforcing his belief in Gambhir's steadfast dedication to the national team.
