MS Dhoni's CSK Shareholding Revealed: Over 1 Lakh Shares Valued at ₹3 Crore

· · 2 min read

Former India captain MS Dhoni reportedly owns more than one lakh shares in Chennai Super Kings, making him a minority shareholder in the IPL franchise. These privately acquired holdings are estimated to be worth between ₹2.6 crore and ₹3 crore.

Cricket icon MS Dhoni reportedly holds over one lakh shares in the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK). While a significant personal investment, this stake positions him as a minority shareholder, with the total value of these shares estimated to be in the range of ₹2.6 crore to ₹3 crore.

Dhoni's Investment Profile

Despite his long-standing association with CSK since the inaugural IPL season, Dhoni's shareholding represents a very small fraction of the franchise's overall equity. The estimated value is also modest when compared to his reported net worth, which stands at approximately ₹1,200 crore.

The shares were reportedly acquired through private, off-market transactions. CSK is an unlisted company, meaning its shares are not publicly traded on stock exchanges, making such private acquisitions the primary method for obtaining a stake.

Ownership Structure of CSK

Reports indicate that public shareholders collectively hold over 30 crore CSK shares, accounting for nearly 40% of the company’s total share capital. The Srinivasan family, on the other hand, maintains a controlling interest, holding more than 55% of the franchise.

Denied Reports of Major Stake Acquisition

Recently, there had been speculation that MS Dhoni was looking to acquire a more substantial stake in CSK, with reports suggesting an interest in purchasing between 20% and 25% ownership. However, a senior CSK functionary has explicitly denied these reports, stating that no such discussions had taken place with Dhoni or Mr. N Srinivasan.

While dismissing the rumors of a proposed major stake purchase, the franchise did acknowledge Dhoni's existing shareholding. This investment adds another dimension to his enduring relationship with the Chennai-based franchise, where he remains one of the most influential figures in the team’s illustrious history.
