Indian boxing sensation Lovlina Borgohain has etched her name in history, clinching the gold medal in the women's 75kg category at the Asian Games. Her dominant 5-0 unanimous decision victory over China's Ziyi Bao not only secured a personal triumph but also ended India's 12-year wait for an Asian Games women's boxing gold.
This landmark achievement sees the Olympic medalist upgrade from the silver medal she earned at the previous edition of the Games. Borgohain's win places her in an elite circle, making her only the second Indian woman to secure an Asian Games boxing gold, a feat previously accomplished by the legendary MC Mary Kom.
Mary Kom's historic gold came in the 51kg flyweight division at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. Lovlina's powerful performance in the ring significantly bolstered India's overall boxing medal tally at the current Games.
The Indian boxing contingent showcased a strong performance, assuring a total of six medals. Beyond Borgohain's golden finish, other Indian pugilists also contributed to the medal haul, with Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Kapil Pokhariya (90kg), and Narender Berwal (+90kg) each securing bronze medals. Further adding to the team's success, Parveen Hooda (65kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg) were scheduled to compete for gold later in the day, highlighting India's promising campaign.
This year's showing builds on the momentum from India's successful campaign at the recent Commonwealth Games. India's best-ever boxing performance at the Asian Games remains the 2010 Guangzhou edition, where the team secured an impressive nine medals, including two golds.
