Indian Shooting Legend Jaspal Rana Dies at 49; PM Modi Leads Tributes

Jaspal Rana, India's celebrated shooting coach and former Olympian, passed away at 49 on June 12 after a medical emergency. His death, confirmed by the NRAI, has drawn heartfelt tributes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu, shocking the sporting community.

The Indian sporting fraternity is mourning the loss of Jaspal Rana, a legendary shooter, esteemed coach, and mentor, who passed away at the age of 49 on June 12, 2026. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) confirmed his death, which has sent shockwaves across the nation.

Rana, who had recently returned from the ISSF World Cup in Munich, experienced chest pain and discomfort during the event. Initially dismissing it as acidity, the discomfort returned during his journey back to India. Upon arrival in Delhi, he sought immediate medical attention and was hospitalized, where he later succumbed to the medical emergency, as reported by his brother, Subash Rana.

A Champion Shooter and Decorated Athlete

Born in Uttarakhand in 1976, Jaspal Rana carved a formidable career as one of India's most successful competitive shooters. His remarkable achievements include multiple gold medals at the Asian Games, notably a world record-equalling performance in the 25m Centre Fire Pistol event at the 2006 Asian Games. His contributions to Indian sports were recognized with the Arjuna Award in 1994 and the prestigious Padma Shri in 1997.

The Guiding Force Behind Olympic Success

Beyond his illustrious playing career, Rana transitioned into a highly respected coaching role. In 2020, he was honored with the Dronacharya Award for his outstanding work as a coach. His most celebrated coaching triumph came with Manu Bhaker, whom he reunited with ahead of the Paris Olympics after a brief separation. Under Rana's expert guidance, Bhaker made history at the Paris 2024 Games, becoming India’s first athlete to secure two medals at a single Olympic event, claiming a double bronze. He was widely credited for restoring her confidence and helping her achieve peak performance.

Tributes have poured in from across India, highlighting Rana's immense impact on the nation's sports landscape. President of India, Droupadi Murmu, expressed her sorrow on X, stating, “The news of the passing of Shri Jaspal Rana Ji is extremely sad. He was a renowned shooter whose exceptional performances brought glory to the nation.” She further praised his lasting contribution as both an athlete and mentor, noting his dedication, discipline, and commitment to excellence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his deep sadness, writing on X, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Jaspal Rana Ji. His passing is a profound loss to the world of Indian sports.” The Prime Minister lauded Rana’s extraordinary achievements as a shooter and his equally remarkable role as a mentor, shaping and guiding young athletes with great dedication.
