Nisshin, Japan – India has claimed the gold medal in men's cricket at the Asian Games 2026, triumphing over arch-rivals Pakistan by 19 runs in a compelling final held on Saturday. The Indian squad set a formidable target of 212 runs after batting first, ultimately restricting Pakistan to 192/6 in their 20 overs.

India's Dominant Batting Performance

Captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that quickly paid dividends. Openers Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma provided a blistering start. Sooryavanshi contributed 15 runs from just 9 balls, while Abhishek Sharma was the standout, smashing 61 off 28 deliveries, including three fours and seven sixes, setting a strong foundation.

Despite brief contributions from Sanju Samson (2) and captain Iyer (21), the middle order kept the scoreboard ticking. Ishan Kishan added 20 runs from 18 balls. The innings received a late surge from Tilak Varma, who remained unbeaten with a rapid 51 off just 22 balls, featuring three fours and four sixes. Shivam Dube also played a crucial role, scoring 27 off 15 deliveries, propelling India to a challenging total of 211/6.

Pakistan's Chase Falls Short

Chasing 212 for gold, Pakistan began their innings with intent but struggled to maintain the required scoring rate against a disciplined Indian bowling attack. Despite their efforts, they ultimately fell short, finishing their 20 overs at 192/6. India's bowlers, including key contributor Washington Sundar, managed to control the run flow and prevent Pakistan from mounting a successful chase, securing the gold medal for their nation.

This victory marks a significant achievement for India in the men's cricket competition at the Asian Games, underscoring their dominance in the sport on the continental stage.
