Glenn Maxwell, 'Big Show,' Retires from International Cricket After 14 Years

· · 2 min read

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, known as 'The Big Show,' has announced his retirement from international cricket after a 14-year career. The three-time World Cup winner cited being left out of upcoming squads as a factor, opting to focus on franchise cricket.

Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell, affectionately nicknamed 'The Big Show' for his explosive style, has officially announced his retirement from international cricket. The 38-year-old all-rounder concludes a remarkable 14-year career that saw him become one of the sport's most dynamic white-ball players.

A Legacy of Impact and World Cup Glory

Maxwell's career was defined by his unorthodox strokeplay, exceptional athletic fielding, and a unique ability to single-handedly change the course of a match in just a few overs. He represented Australia in seven Tests, 149 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 130 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), accumulating 7,226 international runs and taking 136 wickets across all formats.

A true champion, Maxwell was an integral part of three World Cup-winning Australian squads: the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups in 2015 and 2023, and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021. His most iconic performance often cited is the incredible unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup, widely hailed as one of the greatest ODI innings ever played.

T20I Records and Recognitions

In T20 Internationals, Maxwell holds the world record for the most centuries, with five to his name, a feat he shares with Rohit Sharma. His T20I strike rate of 154.42 underscores his aggressive and impactful batting.

Reasons Behind the Decision

Speaking on the Final Word Podcast, Maxwell described his decision as “a little bit sad and a little bit inevitable too.” He clarified that there was no pressure from the Australian T20 team management. However, his omission from upcoming squads for series against Bangladesh and England played a significant role in his choice.

Instead of pursuing an international farewell, Maxwell expressed a desire to focus on maintaining fitness for a “fairytale send-off” in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. He had hoped for a final appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during Australia’s T20I against England on November 21 but was not selected as selectors opted to focus on emerging talent.

What's Next for The Big Show

While his international journey concludes, Maxwell will continue to be a prominent figure in franchise T20 cricket. He remains contracted with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League until the end of the 2027-28 season. Additionally, he has confirmed his decision to step away from first-class cricket with Victoria, signaling a clear shift towards a white-ball specialist role in domestic leagues.
