Fitness Scrutiny for India's Test Squad: Hardik, Jadeja, Siraj Face Assessments

· · 2 min read

The BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru is conducting extensive fitness assessments for key Indian cricketers. Players like Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Siraj are under scrutiny ahead of the Sri Lanka Test series.

Bengaluru's BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) is currently abuzz with activity as numerous Indian cricketers undergo crucial fitness assessments and rehabilitation programs. This intensive period of evaluation comes ahead of significant domestic and international commitments, including the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka and the domestic Duleep Trophy.

Key Players Under Fitness Scrutiny

Several prominent players are either already at the CoE or are expected to report soon. All-rounder Hardik Pandya is actively training, while Nitish Kumar Reddy, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Harshit Rana are focusing on rehabilitation from injuries. Reports indicate that fast bowler Mohammed Siraj and star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja are also anticipated to join the facility for their mandatory checks. This rigorous process is especially critical for those eyeing a spot in the Test squad for the Sri Lanka tour next month.

A BCCI source emphasized the importance of these evaluations, stating, "The team management doesn't want to take any chances with regard to its players ahead of the Sri Lanka Test series. Thorough assessments will be carried out, and the selectors will be informed about their status before the team is picked for the two Tests."

Workload Management and Future Planning

Beyond the immediate international assignments, the CoE is also monitoring other targeted players like Sarfaraz Khan, Musheer Khan, and Abhishek Porel, who have already completed their initial evaluations. This proactive approach by the BCCI underscores a broader strategy to manage player workloads and ensure readiness across all formats, particularly given the tight scheduling and past injury concerns.

The focus on fitness extends to domestic tournaments as well. Another BCCI source highlighted, "The CoE has a fair idea of the targeted players after the red-ball tournament in Bengaluru; the domestic season starts next month, so even the targeted players need to be evaluated because there won't be much time once the action gets underway."

Recurring injuries, particularly to players like Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy, have prompted the BCCI to intensify its focus on fitness management. During former head coach Rahul Dravid's tenure, comprehensive year-long roadmaps were established by the BCCI medical team, the CoE, and team management to optimize player performance leading up to major ICC events. The current activity at the Bengaluru facility reinforces its pivotal role in India's strategic cricket planning, ensuring players are in peak condition for a demanding season.
