FIFA World Cup 2026: 59% of Indians Plan to Watch; Argentina is Top Favorite

· · 3 min read

An Ipsos survey reveals 59% of Indians plan to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026, with defending champions Argentina emerging as the clear favorite. Fans face challenges from time zone differences and potential extreme weather.

Football fever is set to grip India as the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches, with a significant majority of the population planning to tune in. Despite India not participating in the tournament, an Ipsos survey indicates that nearly six in ten Indians (59%) intend to follow the month-long event, demonstrating football's robust appeal alongside cricket, the nation's dominant sport.

The survey highlights strong interest among Indian audiences, fueled by the global spectacle of the World Cup and the enduring draw of iconic players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Suresh Ramalingam, CEO of Ipsos India, noted that while cricket remains a national favorite, the quadrennial nature of the FIFA World Cup creates a unique sense of occasion and excitement.

Argentina Emerges as India's Favorite to Win

Defending champions Argentina have emerged as the overwhelming favorite among Indian fans. According to the Ipsos survey, 68% of Indian respondents believe Argentina will successfully retain their title, making India one of the most optimistic markets globally for the Albiceleste, outside of Argentina itself.

Indian fans traditionally rally behind football powerhouses such as Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, Germany, and France. States with long-standing football cultures, including West Bengal, Kerala, Goa, Manipur, and Mizoram, continue to contribute significantly to the sport's popularity across the country.

Historic Tournament with New Challenges

The 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup marks a historic expansion, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Featuring an unprecedented 48 teams and 104 matches, it is poised to be the largest World Cup in history, running from June 11 to July 19.

However, Indian viewers will face challenges due to the significant time difference between India and the North American host nations, ranging from 9.5 to 12.5 hours. This disparity is expected to divide audiences into dedicated overnight viewers and those who will opt for highlights and match recaps. The schedule does offer some relief, with 35 of the 104 matches slated for weekends, potentially boosting live viewership.

Weather Concerns Loom for Host Cities

Beyond time zones, concerns over potential weather disruptions are also prevalent among Indian respondents. The survey found that 67% of Indians believe extreme weather events could lead to match postponements or cancellations. The three host countries are anticipated to experience varying summer conditions, including heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and extreme heat. With only a limited number of stadiums featuring retractable roofs, weather-related interruptions remain a distinct possibility.

The Ipsos survey was conducted between October 24 and November 7, 2025, involving 23,642 adults across 30 countries. In India, approximately 2,200 respondents participated, primarily through face-to-face interviews, with some conducted online.
