The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rolled out a stringent new advisory for all ten Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises ahead of the 2026 season. Citing potential reputational harm and security risks, the new guidelines target player conduct, team management protocols, and owner interactions.
Strict Protocols for Hotel Room Access
One of the primary directives from the BCCI focuses on restricting access to players' and officials' hotel rooms. Unauthorized visitors are now strictly prohibited, with written authorization from team managers mandated for any guest access. The BCCI's anti-corruption unit flagged concerns regarding potential “honey traps, legal liability, and security risks,” including serious allegations related to sexual misconduct.
Players and support staff are also required to adhere to a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), which includes informing their Security Liaison Officer (SLO) and Team Integrity Officer (TIO) before leaving team hotels at irregular hours. The advisory also warns of potential periodic checks conducted by the BCCI or IPL authorities to ensure compliance.
Owners Barred from Direct Match Interaction
To maintain the sanctity of the Players' And Match Officials Access (PMOA) areas, the BCCI has explicitly prohibited IPL franchise owners and their representatives from communicating with or physically accessing players or team officials in the dugout, dressing room, or playing area during live match situations. Instances of owners attempting to interact with players during matches have been observed, which the board states directly contravenes established protocol and could interfere with team dynamics and match proceedings. Interactions must now occur only through designated and approved channels.
Vape and Electronic Cigarette Ban
In a clear stance on health and legal compliance, the advisory also bans vapes and electronic cigarettes. The BCCI highlighted that these devices are prohibited under Indian law, and any violation could constitute a cognizable offense under applicable statutory frameworks. This rule reinforces existing legal prohibitions and ensures all stakeholders adhere to national regulations.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that these advisories were issued in light of “certain incidents” observed during the ongoing season, aiming to “reinforce the standards of professionalism, discipline, security awareness, and protocol compliance expected from all stakeholders associated with IPL.”
