Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' Cleared by CBFC with A Certificate After Extensive Cuts

· · 3 min read

Actor-CM Vijay Thalapathy's highly anticipated film 'Jana Nayagan' has finally received an A (adult) certificate from the CBFC, ending seven months of delays. The clearance follows numerous audio and visual modifications, including the removal of political abbreviations and sensitive content.

Chennai, India – Actor-turned-politician Vijay Thalapathy's much-anticipated film, Jana Nayagan, has finally secured an A (adult) certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after a protracted seven-month delay. The revising committee’s decision comes after filmmakers implemented extensive audio and visual modifications requested by the board.

Extensive Modifications Implemented

The certification note details a wide array of edits across the film's sound and visuals. One of the most significant changes involved the removal of the abbreviation "TVK." In the film, Vijay’s character is named Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, but "TVK" also refers to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, the political party founded by Vijay. Specifically, the dialogue "Ambedkar sattam...to... TVK sattam" was altered, with the reference to "TVK" removed from both audio and video.

Further modifications include:

  • Ensuring "Ambedkar is shown on the cover page of the book wherever it appears" through dialogue changes.
  • Deletion of visuals depicting the Indian flag falling to the ground.
  • Muting of the words "Bhagavatham" and "Ranganathar."
  • Censoring of two cuss words.
  • Removal of the syllable "OM" wherever uttered.
  • Deletion of the phrase "New India" when used in explanations of "Operation Meluha."
  • Muting or replacement of several visuals and references connected to a character named "Shri Saddam," including lines about hanging.
  • Substitution of a shot showing a DC’s office badge being rolled down disrespectfully with alternate footage.
  • Muting of the line "Ponnoda... kudthu vachirukkum, Udambu erukirunu" and the phrase "India n kalla virala vaikarne."
  • Deletion and replacement of child-burning visuals.
  • Muting of the word "Siluvaila."
  • Replacement of occurrences of the name "Sheela Rani."

Protracted Delays and Piracy Issues

The path to certification for Jana Nayagan has been fraught with challenges. Originally slated for a January 9 release during the Pongal season, the film was submitted to the CBFC in December 2025. An internal complaint after initial examination led to the matter being escalated to a revising committee, causing significant delays. Producers from KVN Productions even approached the Madras High Court for faster certification, though the petition was later withdrawn.

Adding to the film's woes, an high-definition pirated copy leaked online in April, leading to widespread illegal access. Prosecutors informed the Madras High Court that approximately 1.2 crore users had viewed the pirated version before it was blocked, resulting in several arrests linked to the leak.

Film Details and Upcoming Release

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features a star-studded cast including Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, and Narain. Often described in media as Vijay's farewell film, its certified runtime now stands at three hours and three minutes following the extensive edits.

While an official release date is yet to be announced, industry sources suggest Jana Nayagan is expected to hit screens on July 23 or July 24, allowing audiences to finally see the highly anticipated production.
